1905-1926 The Morocco Partition
In April 1904, Britain recognized Morocco as a French sphere of interest. Later that year France and Spain divided Morocco into zones of influence, with Spain receiving the region in the south which would eventually become Spanish Sahara. Imperial Germany disputed these arrangements. The Act of Algeciras in January 1906 signed in Algeciras, Spain guaranteed economic access of the major powers in Morocco. In July 1911, the Germans sent the gunboat Panther to the Moroccan port city of Agadir. This incident provoked France and brought Europe to the brink of war. Germany later agreed to a French protectorate over Morocco.
