The land of Narnia had only giant lizards and dragons who tear up trees and consuming them. Soon, the land is barren and the details of the hills and valleys can easily be seen. A wall of water, the rising sea, covers Narnia and came swirling up to the door but not beyond it. Dawn breaks and the sun rises to start a new Narnian day. The sun is dying, however, as Polly and Digory observe. Then rises the moon, out of place near the sun and is consumed by the sun.
Aslan tells Time to make an end. The giant throws his horn into the sea and reaches out with a great hand and crushes the sun out of existence. Total darkness falls and the cold is immediate. Peter is commanded to close the door, which he does and locks it with a great golden key. Aslan commands them to come further up and further in. He bounds away to the west as the rest slowly follow, leaving the unseeing dwarfs behind them. One of the dogs smells a Calormene and all go to find him. They see Emeth sitting beneath a tree. The others sit, as they are invited to do so, as he tells his tale.
Emeth tells of the Calormene invasion, how they dressed as merchants to secretly enter Narnia, and his disapproval of this deception, as well as having to serve Shift who called Tash and Aslan one and the same. He tells of the monkey and the false Aslan and how he desired to see tash after ginger the cat had her experience in the stable. Upon entering the stable, he found himself in the sunlight and the guard stationed at the door who was to kill any who entered. Emeth struck first, killing the soldier and threw him outside the stable. He proceeded into the sunlit world and was shortly approached by Aslan, who accepts Emeth despite his former service to Tash and commands Emeth to go further up and further in. When Emeth finishes his tale, the group sees the timid Puzzle, slowly approaching. He is afraid of meeting the true Lion after dressing as a lion. Jill and Lucy console him, telling him that all would work out.
The party begins moving westward. The land is strangely familiar to them, but none can quite discern why. Once they are further up and further in, they do realize that they are in fact in Narnia with all of the familiar landmarks - a New Narnia. Jewel declares that this was where he was always meant to be. He runs forward and the others find, in their amazement, that they are able to keep up with him without tiring. They come to Caldron Pool and are concerned about how to get beyond the unclimbable cliffs. All jump into the water and find that they are able to swim up the waterfall into the land beyond Narnia. At the top they were off again, Digory and Polly recalling the time when they took this journey on Fledge's back. They rush forward, up a grassy hill and reach the top where they see a large golden gate. While trying to decide whether they should enter, a horn sounds and Reepicheep the Mouse steps forward, encouraging the group to come further up and further in. Many of the familiar faces in Narnia come to greet them as they enter, including Tumnus the Faun, the first person Lucy met in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
All soon realize that the world within is larger than the world outside. Everything is more beautiful. Even the world on this side of the wardrobe is seen, as an England within England. The children see Professor Kirke's old house and even their own parents, waving as if from a great dock. The children begin to run towards their parents when Aslan approaches. He calls to him Puzzle who weakly approaches. Aslan whispers something to Puzzle before he addresses the children. Aslan notes that they do not look as happy as He had hoped and Lucy explains that they are afraid of being sent back to their own country. Aslan assures them theat he will not because they are in fact dead - killed in a railway accident. Aslan's form then changes and He no longer appears to them as a Lion but rather a greater and more beautiful form. All of the previous stories have been but the cover and title page of the real story. Now, at last, Chapter One of the Great Story which goes on forever was beginning and each chapter would be better than the one before it.
