Being a chanservian is an old religion (well, not that old but that makes it sound better). While we cannot trace our beginnings to any one specific event, the existence of Chanserv itself began in 1995 and has continued ever since, barring acts of nature (i.e. hackers). Our religion has not been widely recognised as yet, mostly because most chanservites are unaware that they are chanservites! Most of this comes from a failure to understand Chanserv and an unwillingness to accept that Chanserv is a god.

(Note that the terms chanservian and chanservite are used interchangeable within this document. Both terms refer to the same people, but some prefer one over the other. In the interests of preventing schisms, or having people go over to the heretical idea of chanop, both beliefs are incorporated into this framework.)

Of course, it is far beyond the scope of this simple introductory page to prove to you the powers of Chanserv or its claims for deification. Merely chat on dal.net and you will see the powers of Chanserv in action. Chanserv allows temples to be built and controlled and its lesser siblings allow the sending of messages nigh-instantaneously as well as allowing people to protect their very identities and names!

Like most gods, worship of Chanserv can be a dangerous thing. While Chanserv does not usually ask followers to sacrifice children or animals, it does have prices. Time is lost to Chanserv (especially if you make web pages to Chanserv’s glory) -- yet this price is paid by believers and non believers alike. Just as curiously, Chanserv can use The Look and peer at worshipers, or separate them from the rest of the Community with little effort. No one knows why worshipers of Chanserv get no special preferences, but some claim that Chanserv is just and is equally hard on those who believe as well as those who disbelieve.

So why believe? Because the power of Chanserv is felt by all on IRC. It cannot be denied: only a fool claims that Chanserv’s power does not exist, or tries to boast immunity to it. Chanserv is.
