A Saucerful Of Secrets |
1- Let There Be More Light Written by: Waters Running Time: 5:37 Rating: ***** Comment: This is a great song, the best on the album. This entire album served as a transition away from the Barrett style, and this song shows it. It starts out very Barrett-like, then makes the transition to a new, better style. Lyrics: far-far-far-ar away-way people heard him say-say i will find a way-way there will come a day-day something will be done then at last the mighty ship descending on a point of flame made contact with the human race at mildenhall now-now-now is the time-time-time to be-be-be aware carter's father saw it there and knew the rhull revealed to him the living soul of hereward the wake oh my, something in my eye-eye something in the sky-sky waiting there for me the outer lock rolled slowly back, the servicemen were heard to sigh for there revealed in flowing robes was lucy in the sky oh-oh, did you ever? no-no never-ever will they i'll say summonning his cosmic power and glowing slightly from his toes his psychic emanations flowed |
2- Remember A Day Written by: Wright Running Time: 4:33 Rating: **** Comments: Wright's first contribution to an album, this is a good, easy song. Lyrics: remember a day before today a day when you were young free to play along with time evening never comes sing a song that can't be sung without the morning's kiss queen, you shall be if you wish look for your king why can't we play today? why can't we stay that way? climb your favourite apple tree try to catch the sun hide from your little brother's gun dream yourself away why can't we reach the sun? why can't we blow the years away? blow away, blow away, remember, remember |
3- Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun Written by: Waters Running Time: 5:27 Other Versions: Ummagumma (live album), In The Flesh, Live at Pompeii Rating: **** Comments: A soft, slow song, that takes your mind on a journey. The lyrics are taken from a book of philosophy, all except "set the controls for the heart of the sun", and they are pretty intriguing if you listen to them. Lyrics: little by little, the night turns around counting the leaves which tremble at dawn lotuses lean on each other in yearning over the hills a swallow is resting set the controls for the heart of the sun over the mountain, watching the watcher breaking the darkness waking the grapevine knowledge of love is knowledge of shadow love is the shadow that ripens the wine set the controls for the heart of the sun, the heart of the sun... witness the man who raves at the wall making the shape of his question to heaven whether the sun will fall in the evening will he remember the lesson of giving? set the controls for the heart of the sun, the heart of the sun... |
4- Corporal Clegg Written by: Waters Running Time: 4:12 Rating: *** Comments: This is Waters's first song on the subject of war, and it is nothing like his later lyrics. It's not a very beautiful song, but it's very amusing, and the kazoos add a nice touch. Lyrics: corporal clegg had a wooden leg he won it in the war in nineteen forty-four corporal clegg had a medal too in orange, red, and blue he found it in the zoo dear oh dear oh, are they really sad for me? dear oh dear oh, will they really laugh at me? missus clegg, you must be proud of him missus clegg, another drop of gin? corporal clegg, umbrella in the rain he's never been the same no one is to blame corporal clegg received his medal in a dream from her majesty the queen his boots were very clean missus clegg, you must be proud of him missus clegg, another drop of gin? corporal clegg corporal clegg |
5- A Saucerful Of Secrets Written by: Waters, Wright, Mason, Gilmour Running Time: 11:56 Other Versions: Ummagumma (live album), Live at Pompeii RANKING: (different version): #19 (this version ****) Comments: This is the first big-time instrumental song undertaken by the band without Syd, and it foreshadows the future projects the band will undertake, such as "Echoes". While this version is not as good as "Interstellar Overdrive", or even the best song on the album, the live version of the song, featuring Gilmour's vocalizations, is spectacular, and one of the best songs Pink Floyd has ever recorded. (no lyrics) |
6- See-Saw Written by: Wright Running Time: 4:36 Rating: ** Comments: This song isn't really that bad, but it still is one of the worst songs ever recorded by Pink Floyd. Wright's lyrics are terrible, and the melody is tedious. Lyrics: marigolds are very much in love but he doesn't mind picking up his sister he makes his way to see-saw land all the way she smiles she goes up while he goes down, down sits on a stick in the river laughter in his sleep sister's throwing stones hoping for a hit he doesn't know, so then she goes up while he goes down, down another time, another day a brother's way to leave another time, another day selling plastic flowers on a sunday afternoon picking up weeds she hasn't got the time to care all can see he's not there she grows up for another man, and he's down another time, another day a brother's way to leave another time, another day another time, another day a brother's way to leave |
7- Jugband Blues Written by: Barrett Running Time: 2:59 Rating: ***** Comments: Syd's only contribution to this album, and his last song with Pink Floyd, is a haunting mixture of melodies and lyrics. It's a very good song, but you can't help wondering what was going on in his mind when he wrote it. Lyrics: it's awfully considerate of you to think of me here and i'm most obliged to you for making it clear that i'm not here and i never knew the moon could be so big and i never knew the moon could be so blue and i'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes and brought me here instead dressed in red and i'm wondering who could be writing this song i don't care if the sun don't shine and i don't care if nothing is mine and i don't care if i'm nervous with you i'll do my loving in the winter and the sea isn't green and i love the queen and what exactly is a dream? and what exactly is a joke? |

Released: 1968 by Tower Records Running Time: 39:20 Ranking: #12 out of 14 studio albums Album Highlight: Let There Be More Light Album Weak Point: See-Saw Average Song Rating: **** Comments: This is said to be the first Floyd concept album, in that all the songs seem to tie into each other. If they do, it is very loosely, and the concept is a somewhat abstract perception of war. The songs vary from poor to excellent, with the best songs at the beginning and end. The title track is one of the weaker songs. While the level of emotion doesn't even come close to later albums, this album is very easy to listen to, and does contain some great melodies. |
