Labradors have a double coat: a soft, downy undercoat that keeps them dry and warm in cold water, and a hard coat that helps them repel water.
Their tail is thick at the base and tapers to a narrow point. It shouldn't have a curl in it nor should it be carried over the back.
Their head is clean cut with hanging ears. Some labs can have a soft pink nose. Sometimes called a "winternose" or "snownose".
Their expression is alert and intelligent and they have a kind, friendly temperament.
Labradors come in three colors: black, chocolate and yellow. Their color has nothing to do with their temperament and also says nothing about if he or she is a good swimmer. Sometimes people say that black labs are good hunters and yellow labs are good swimmer, well it has nothing to do with their color.

Labradors are loving, people oriented dogs. They love it to be with you. They also like it to bring all kinds of things to you, like newspapers or other things they find in your house or yard. Labs are well known as swimmers, and they like it but they do have to learn it. Don't "throw" them in deep water, but let them slowly get used to the water.
Labradors are easy to train and most of the time they even like it a lot ! Because they love to eat, a long walk 2- 3 times a day is necessary.
When you give your lab enough attention, exercise and love you will have a happy and healthy dog.

Labradors are often used as a Service and therapy dog, and also they do very well in Search and Rescue work. Their nose, disposition and easy to train make them suitable for these types of activities.
Labs are good with children. However never let your dog alone with your child. You never know what can happen.
Labs are no guard dogs. They may bark when something happen but that's it. They probably walk to you and lick you all over than hurt you.
However, like i just said, they can bark just to let you know that something unusual is happening.
