과거완료 진행형 (The past perfect continuous)

1. 형태 (Form)
 
    과거완료 진행형은 had been + ing 형태이다.

    I had been waiting ages. 또는 I'd been waiting ages.

    I had not been paying attention. 또는 I'hadn't been paying attention.

    Was the ground wet? Had it been raining?

2. I had been doing 또는 I had done?

   * 다음 과거완료 진행형과 단순형을 비교해 보시오.

    한 시점 이상 (had been doing)                                          완성시점 (had done)

  I found the calculator. I'd been looking for it          I finally bought a new calculator. I'd looked
       for ages.                                                                 everywhere for the old one. 
  
  Min-ho felt tired because she'd been working      Min-ho felt pleased because she'd done so
       all day.                                                                    much work.

  * 민호는 계속 작업중이라는 의미이다.                           * 민호는 작업을 완료했다는 의미이다.
 
  * how long을 말하는 어구와 함께 보통 진행형을 쓴다.   * how much/many를 말하는 어구와 함께 단순형을 쓴다.

  When the company went bankrupt, it had been     When the company went bankrupt, it had lost over
       losing money for months.                                           a million pounds.

  * 상태동사에 대해서는 보통 진행형을 쓰지 않는다.     * 상태동사에 대해서는 과거완료형을 쓴다.

  틀림) He had been seeming unwell.                        The old man had seemed unwell for some time

3. 다른 진행형과 비교

 1) 현재완료 진행형 (has/have been doing) 과 과거완료 진행형의 비교.

      Suk-hee looks very upset. I think she's been crying.
      Suk-hee looked very upset. I thought she'd been crying.

 2) 과거 진행형 (was doing)과 과거완료 진행형의 비교.

      When I phoned, Min-hae was having a piano lesson. (I phoned during the lesson.)

      When I phoned, Min-hae had been having a piano lesson. (I phoned after the lesson.)
