1. 과거 단순 시제

 1) 긍정형: 규칙 과거형은 끝에 -ed 가 붙는다.

    It happened very quickly.        The van crashed into the car.
    I posted the letter yesterday.   We once owned a caravan.

    * 일부 동사는 불규칙 과거형을 갖는다.
    The car came out of a side road.        Chul-soo rang earlier.      I won the game.
    I had breakfast at six.        The train left on time.       We took some photos.

    * 과거 단순 시제는 과거시제 be를 제외하고 모든 인칭에서 같다.
     I /he /she /it was          ---->   I was ill last week.
     You /we / they were     ---->   Those cakes were nice.

2. 부정문과 의문문 (Negatives and questions)

 1) 부정문과 의문문에는 did를 사용한다.

   The car did not stop.      The driver didn't look to his right.

2) 부정문이나 의문문에서 stopped 혹은 rang 과 같이 과거형을 사용하지 않는다.
     틀림) The car didn't stopped and Did you rang?

3) 부정문과 의문문에서 was 나 were를 사용한다.

3. 사용

과거에 완성된 것에 대해서는 과거 단순 시제를 쓴다.

Chul-soo passed her exam last year.
We went to the theater on Friday.
Elvis Presley died in 1977.
I knew what the problem was.
When did you buy this car?   ~ About three years ago.
