1. 과거 진행형

   1) 형태: 과거진행형은 be동사 + ing 형태이다.

       I/he/she/it was playing
       you/we/they were playing

   2) 사용

  다음 대화를 읽어 보시오.

  Suk-hee: I rang at about three yesterday afternoon, but you weren't in.
                   I didn't know where you were.

  Chul-soo: Oh, I was helping Min-su. We were repairing his car. It took ages.
                   We were working on it all afternoon.

  Suk-hee: It was raining. I hope you weren't doing it outside.

  Min-su :  No, we were in the garage. So I didn't get wet. But I'm afraid I got oil
                 all over my new trousers.

  Suk-hee: Why were you wearing your new trousers to repair a car?

  Min-su:   I don't know. I forget I had them on.

  It was raining at three o'clock  의 의미는 비가 오는 시기의 한 가운데가 3시라는 것을 의미한다.
   비는 3시 이전에 내리기 시작해서 3시 이후 언젠가 멈첬다.
  We were working all afternoon 의 의미는 그 행위가 전 시간에 걸쳐서 계속되었다는 것을 의미한다.
  민수는 그 일을 계속하는 동안 스트레스중이라는 것이다.

* 행위에 관한 것은 진행형 시제를 쓰지만, 상태동사들은 보통 쓰지 않는다.
   다음과 같이 상태는 과거시제를 쓴다.
