The Royle Family first appeared on BBC2 in late 1998 and quickly established a large enough following for it to have moved to BBC1 for its second series. Set in the the Royle family lounge, most episodes consist of the Royles sitting around smoking and watching television, with occasional visits from the next door neighbours.
Despite this lack of action, its characterisation and dialogue make The Royle Family probably the funniest and most original TV comedy of the 1990's.
