Wanted: Vagina Monologue in Waray

The subject of 'vagina monologue" aroused my senses when my friends started talking about it. They are planning to perform this very ticklish subejct turning it to be a comical show. What's more intriguing is the language chosen : Wara-Waray, a dialect form of the Visayan language in the Philippines where I speak fluently. Waray culture, I must say, has a lot to face in this ever-changing world and even if this proposed production can trigger wild clamour among the conservative few, we must realize we are no longer living in a primordial state of existence. Certainly our desires have esacalated over time. This presentation will open up new views about feminism in the local perspective. It can be a standard for women's rights and priveleges in a once patriarchal society. Giving us insights and a good laugh will definitely remove qualms.

While the production is in its incipient stage, I am inclined to believe that a provincial woman will be the perfect character for the monologue. Her pure values of innocence, ignorance and simplicity can be used as paradoxical symbols because in the world of vaginas, she excells. A married woman with some passion for lesbian sex helps us to believe she is not at all pure and innocent. She is bound to delude the audience with her sexual fantasies.

Vagina is not a mere instrument for orgasmic powers these days. It represents a culture that speaks out. It cultivates the inne most definition of a woman in the society like role-models, or prostitutes, etc. Moreso, spiritual emancipation captures the mind of an audience, kind of a liberation because vagina is often construed as a private subject. Well, in here it glows and indeed very conspicuous.

Men are supposed to experience sexual enlightenment but not in the pornographic sense. It is not a porno production but an intellectual quest. Uttering words about the feminine world gives men a chance to respect relationships which ultimately leads to healthy marriage life, for example.

The monologue in its pure dialect form is revolutionary and as I said before can elicit debates, doubts but that is open to everyone. There is always a repercussive impact each time a new production comes out because social acceptance is not an overnight idea. It gradually feeds the consciousness and until then, a series of debacles will be underway. When this process hightens, awareness grows. Women empower themselves to greatness, to mere sexual objects if they have to. Whatever it serves, Waray culture responds to global trends and certainly active and wanting to explore.
