Plants For The Frog Tank

Sam Forster

Birds Nest Fern Asplenium sp.

Light Requirements: Medium

Humidity: High

Grow Hydroponically: No

Propagation: Propagules

The Birds Nest Fern is a large plant with big green leaves, ideally suited to the role of feature plant in any frog tank. This plant provides good hiding places for frogs, however generally does not grow well with its roots submerged, unless in a low humidity environment.

Pothos Vines Epipremnum sp.

Light Requirements: Medium

Humidity: Any

Grow Hydroponically: Yes

Propagation: Stem Cutting

Propagation: Stem Cutting

The Pothos Vine is a relatively large vine species well suited to the frog aquarium. Although able to grow well with their roots submerged I prefer to situate them at the top of the tank and allow their vines to hang down. This due to the limited number of plants that can fulfil this niche while also being suitable for the frog tank.

Chinese Evergreen Aglaonema sp.

Light Requirements: Low

Humidity: High

Grow Hydroponically: Yes

Propagation: Propagules

The Chinese Evergreen is one of the most versatile plants used in the frog tank. They survive happily with minimal light, high humidity or with their roots completely submerged. This species is most commonly used, and quite useful, as a space filler, however it is an appealing plant in its own right and thus can also be utilised as a feature plant in a small or medium sized tank.

Philodendron Philodendron sp.

Light Requirements: Medium

Humidity: Low to Medium

Grow Hydroponically: No

Propagation: Stem Cuttings

Like the Pothos Vine the Philodendron is suited to areas at the top of the frog tank. This is effectively the only location for this plant, due to its inability to grow with its roots submerged.

Peace Lily Spathiphyllum clevelandii

Light Requirements: Low to Medium

Humidity: Medium to High

Grow Hydroponically: Yes

Propagation: Division of Clumps

The Peace Lily is by far my favourite plant for the frog tank. Almost indestructible they will grow under any conditions, but prefer high humidity and low light. Areas such as these exist in the shadows of other, larger plants. When alone, or mixed with other plants such as Chinese Evergreen they act as the perfect space filler and are loved by frogs.

Spider Plant: Chlorophytum comosum mandaianum

Light Requirements: Medium to High

Humidity: Medium

Grow Hydroponically: Yes

Propagation: Plantlets

The Spider Plant is one of the easiest plants to propagate in the frog tank, however, depending on your tank, the high light requirement with medium humidity makes its ideal conditions unlikely to be satisfied in the frog tank. This said it is an interesting plant with unusual colouration and can make an interesting addition if the proper conditions can be provided.
