Memories Of Old Les In Time

Memories ~ Page 5
In 1959, Hollywood Florida was not
a very big town,
but I was already feeling better just to be away
from St. Charles.
We found a house about
2 miles from the beach, within walking distance
to the schools and the downtown. I had no idea
what I was going to do for a job yet, but I knew
this was going to be a good new start.

The house we found had a little cottage in the
back of it that would be perfect if Una's mother
decided to come and live with us. She could
still have the independence of having her own
place, but she would still be right there with us.
It wasn't long before I found a job
as a carpenter and everything was working
out just fine. Una and I loved the warm weather
and the kids were adjusting very well to the move.
Our first Christmas in sunny Florida
was quite different with no snow and no cold weather.
I think the kids just traded building snowmen
for building sand castles!!

The following summer of 1960,
We returned to St. Charles to bring Una's
mother down to live with us. She had changed
her mind in the time we were gone,
and had decided to come and live with us!
We were happy now that we would all be together
once again.
We had missed her alot.

Everything was going well.
The family was all together and
we were getting used to our new home.
Within a few months, we were pleasantly surprised to
find out we were once again adding to our family!!
I couldn't beleive this!
I was almost 43 years old!!
We thought we were almost done raising kids,
but to our surprise, in June of 1961,
we were blessed with another little girl.

Our little Tammy!!

I always called her "Daddy's little Rose".

We were quickly outgrowing our house now.
We decided we were going to need more room,
and found a bigger house,
much bigger, for all of us to live in.
The three older kids were all in their teens now,
busy with their teen things,
but pretty excited about the new baby.

The next year I started another business
with a guy named Paul that I had met while
working on quite a few jobs together.
He had been the foreman and we got along pretty well.
We called it Award Winning Crafts.
We had both won quite a few craftsman awards
for the carpenter work we had done.
Since I had been in business for myself once before,
it made it alot easier starting this one.

I had developed this resin type plastic
that I could embed shells, rocks, or pretty
much anything in it. It was clear so you could
see whatever was inside of it. It was also a very
strong material that could be used for windows.
We used it in some of the products
we began making, such as table tops, lamps, and awnings.
Since the NY Yankees had their farm team practice
in Ft. Lauderdale, we arranged to have them test
the strength by throwing baseballs at the plastic
to show it wouldn't break.
That lead to a few contracts with different cities
to replace windows in some of the city buildings
with our new material.

I was always coming up with some new bright ideas!!
And Una Marie was always there rooting me on!
She was my very own cheerleader for life!!
As years passed we celebrated one anniversary
after the other.
I think Una just got more beautiful every year.
Everytime she would get dressed up
and walk out of the room,
it was like I was just seeing her again
for the first time.
Whoo hoo!!
She was just beautiful!!
and I just loved that woman!!
