Memories Of Old Les In Time

Memories ~ Page 8

I cut trees down for the lumber
that I was going to need for the bridge and the house.
First we just had just the footbridge to cross over to where we
were going to build the cabin, but I was going to need a
much bigger bridge to drive over!!
There's the footbridge!!
Got the logs in now!!
Well, it holds me up!!
Sitting back, looking at the new bridge. Got the table done!
Our snow covered bridge!

Time to call it another year!!
We'll start again next year!!
The following year we returned and once again
continued building our summer getaway dream cabin!!
This year we decided if we wanted mail, we would
need stairs to go up and down the hill to the mailbox.
I got rocks from the stream to build the foundation
and the stairs going up to the mailbox.
Finished!! They look pretty good!!
Those steps took us pretty much the whole time
we were there that year!
The following year, this was it!
We were going to start on the cabin itself!
Now for the foundation!!
First I had to dig the footer.
Now the cornerstone!!
Moving right along!!
One rock at a time!!
That's one side finished!
I was a Carpenter all my life and like to think
I chose Christ's #2 Profession.
This year was coming to an end and
soon we would be packing it up for another year!
I think everyone thought we had
completely lost our minds!
Here we were, I was 78 years old now,
building a log cabin in the middle of the woods!!
We had been coming up here now for the last 7 years
and had been working on this cabin for the last 5
of them!!
But we just loved being there!
We had a great time meeting new people every year.
There was one couple especially that we had a great time with.
Their names were Ed and Pat. They had the same last
name as our's only spelled with one "L". They would have
us over for dinner and Ed would play the organ and we
all would sing old songs!
Una Marie and Pat both had their little
dogs that they just loved, always sitting on their laps!
Ed and Pat were members of a church nearby and he was
a volunteer fireman. We always had such a great time with them.
It wasn't long before it got around in our
little town, that I liked to write poetry.
A few of the neighbors had asked me to read or write a poem
for one occassion or another.
I was always happy to do it!!
This was a special year as well, since we
welcomed our first great grandchild, Jonathan, in August!
We were anxious to see him.
It was Thursday October 16, 1997.
We were planning our return trip to
Florida once again.
We wanted to head back before the snow came.
My birthday was coming, October 20.
I was going to be 79!
Wow, where did the time go!
Our anniversary was also just a few days away!
October 24th!! 55 years!!
I could hardly believe we would
be married 55 years in just a few days!!
It seems like only yesterday!!
Pat and Ed had invited us over for dinner before we left.
We knew we would have a good time! We always did.
Ed had asked me if I would read one of my poems
at his church the following Sunday.
I said I would love to and Una said she
was going to bring the camera! She took most
of the photos and she was pretty good at it!
When we left their house that night,
we were talking all the way back about which poem
I should read at the church on Sunday and about what day
we should plan on heading back home.
Little did I know....the plans would all
be changed in a way I would never forget..........
