about Eliza. Some could be true, some could be just plain old-fashion family gossip. Researchers on family history are intrigued by Eliza's story/stories and interested in finding out the truth about her plight. Below are the assorted versions of her story. One of the stories going around in the family is that Eliza Jane lived with a Dr. Charles Brock, in London, KY, that they never married, that she had his out-of-wedlock child, named Robert Henry Sasser. (Other possibilities as to the fatherhood of Robert, are mentioned further down the page.) ![]() It has been said that she went to a "Baptist Campground" and got "saved" (meaning that she developed certain religious convictions), and that she then planned to leave Dr. Brock and go to her brother, Robert Eli "Bob" Sasser. Her trunk was found at the train depot, and after it had been unclaimed by her for three months, her oldest brother, John Henry Sasser, went and picked it up, and never did know for the remainder of his life (he died in 1926) what had happened to her. It is said that years later, when Dr. Brock was "near death," he confessed that he had shot and killed her, abandoned her trunk at the depot, to lead her brothers to believe she had gotten on the train, pursuaded a doctor friend of his to certify her as a suicide victim, then they buried her in an unmarked grave, at Rough Creek Cemetery. The child, Robert Henry Sasser, is said to have been raised by his aunts (Eliza's sisters), Margaret Elizabeth "Liz" (Sasser) Cobb and Katherine "Rachel" (Sasser) Attaway (also called "Kate") sometimes living with one, sometimes the other. (See photos at bottom of page) Our website researchers found a marriage certificate showing that Eliza Jane married a John Tuttle on 13 Jul 1892, in Laurel Co, KY, son of A.P. and Elizabeth Tuttle. The documents state that Eliza was 16 at the time, but she was actually 14. One of Eliza's nephews, in 1981, wrote that, "Eliza Sasser was never married, to my knowledge; had one son named Robert Henry (assumed Sasser), the son of one Thomas Hale (Old Rowdy)...." |
James Thomas Hale and Eliza's aunt, Mahala (Sasser) Hale, and that in 1894, he married Eliza Camille/Cuie Tuttle, who was daughter to Joseph Tuttle and Eliza's grandaunt, Patience (Sasser) Tuttle. Mahala was daughter (Child #7) to Adin & Betsy (Waggoner) Sasser. Patience was daughter (Child #13) to Henry & Nancy (Kirby) Sasser. |
on another, 1894. A grandson to Liz (Sasser) Cobb (one of the aunts who raised Robert), distinctly recalls that his mother, Sophia (Cobb) Davis, who grew up with Robert, made the remark many times that Robert, who was raised like a brother to her, was seven years older than she. Sophia was born in 1901, so this would indicate that Robert was born in 1894. Another story in other branches of the family, is that Eliza had Robert (out of wedlock) before she married John Tuttle, that she and John divorced and she then met up with a Dr. G.S. Brock, that Eliza developed VD, and that Dr. Brock took care of her until she died in a Lexington, KY, hospital. Other family stories and gossip: It is said that Eliza began to fear for her life and started wearing a gun-and-holster, visibly buckled around her waist, which she wore every place she went, even into the homes of relatives. She also sent photographs of herself to assorted relatives, with "goodbye" written on the photos. Some think that she was justifiably afraid of Dr. Brock and that he did indeed eventually kill her; but, others think that she slowly lost her mind, becoming paranoid and suicidal, as a result of VD. Research is planned to trace the date of Eliza's death, the exact date of Robert's birth, and possibly some information regarding Dr. G.S. or Charles Brock, John Tuttle, and Thomas "Old Rowdy" Hale. In the meantime, Eliza's story remains as a family "poser." To see the Marriage Documents of Eliza and John Tuttle, Enter Here. |
