![]() During the Civil War, Arter's father, William Humfleet, was for the South, and Manerva's father, Herl Sprinkle, was for the North. Because of that, Manerva's father would not give her in marriage to Arter, so the couple eloped to Cumberland Gap (from Knox Co, KY), and on 19 Feb 1869, in Claiborne Co, TN, they got married. They rode horseback and spent the night at the salt licks in Clay County, KY. |

The 3 antique maps on the right illustrate the areas involved, including some of the towns, county lines, state lines, etc., between Clay Co, KY, and Claiborne Co, TN (one map takes up where another leaves off). The couple left out from - then returned to - Knox County, so why, we wonder, would they have gone north into Clay County? |
