Info obtained from the book,
"The Humfleet Family,"
-by Pat Mellor
~~~
Liz's 1st husband was James Harvey "Harv" Humfleet,
son of
Barnabus &Feraby(Langley) Humfleet.
Barnabus Humfleet is apparently the son of
Jonathan &Elizabeth(Langley) BASS,
and step-son of
James "Jim" Humfleet
(2nd husband of Elizabeth[Langley] Bass).
Jim & Elizabeth(Langley-Bass) Humfleet are the parents of
William "Bill" Humfleet,
the father of three of Herl's sons-in-law
(the husbands of Herl's daughers from his marriage to Tabitha).
Glenn Earl Perry,
gg-grandson of Herl Sprinkle,
who has contributed vast amounts
of info and photos to this website.
We believe that Herl Sprinkle was the son of Jacob Sprinkle,
who descended from one of the three
(formerly believed to be six) immigrants
- the original name was Sprenckel -
from Germany, who first settled in York, PA, in the early
18th century. One branch moved to Virginia. The parentage
of Herl is not proved. I knew from my grandmother that
they came to Kentucky from Lee County, VA.
~the Civil War backdrop of~
"Manerva's & Arter's Elopement"
per family stories shared with us by their great-grandson,
Glenn Earl Perry
During the Civil War, Manerva's father,
Herl Sprinkle, was for the North,
and Arter's father, William Humfleet,
was for the South. Because of that,
Manerva's father would not give her in
marriage to Arter, so the couple eloped
on horseback to Cumberland Gap, and
on 19 Feb 1869, in Claiborne Co, TN,
they got married.
In light of his opposition to
having his daughter marry someone
from a pro-Confederate family,
such as the Humfleets, it is
interesting that two of his other
daughters later married two
of Arter's brothers.
And Herl himself took a Humfleet
widow as his second wife.
