as a school. It must have been in the late 1950's, though, after the bridge was built in 1956 over the creek down the road (right in front of J.B. Cobb's homeplace). My mother's sister Julia and her husband David Elder of Miami, FL, first bought it from the county school system in 1960. They had an idea of making it into a summer cottage but never went through with the plan. They finally arranged for it to be given to my parents after they (the Elders) died. Above is a photo of the school house [photo provided by Mazie(Perry) Sparks] taken after my parents acquired it. The school lot had been right in the middle of our farm. The baccer plants are my dad's (or possibly those of someone who rented the tobacco after my dad got too old to grow it). Considering the bad condition of the roof in this photo (which finally fell in and allowed the building to start crumbling in the late-1990's), and the size of the pine trees on the hill (which were planted by my dad in the mid-1950's), the photo was taken in about the late-1970's or 1980's. |
