THE TEACHER,
Taylor Jackson Jarvis
son of Matt &Sarah(Tedders) Jarvis,
paternal grandparents:
Peter &Dinnah(Woolum) Jarvis
maternal grandparents:
George &Angeline(Taylor) Tedders
was named for his mother's twin brothers,
Taylor and Jackson Tedders.
Taylor was known as a math whiz. He was a principal at
Lone Jack High School, in Bell Co, KY, for a long time,
while Arah taught English at Knox Central High School.
Taylor was an avid fisherman who especially loved to
fish at the Cumberland River. In the mid-1950s, they
moved from their home in Barbourville, to Louisville,
where, in 1958, Taylor drowned while fishing in the
Ohio River. Below is a transcript
of the related news article/obituary.

Barbourville Mountain Advocate,
Sept. 11, 1958, p. 1
Body Of Taylor Jarvis Recovered Wednesday;
Drowned in Boat Mishap
~
Efforts were successful Wednesday to recover body of former
townsman, Taylor Jarvis, who drowned when a fishing boat
capsized in the Ohio River near West Point Saturday. He was
fishing with a fellow teacher at Valley High, Mr. Carroll E.
Word, when the boat drifted too close to the spillway. Neither
man could get time to don their life jackets, but Mr. Word
managed to swim ashore. He said that he never saw Mr. Jarvis
after he went over the spillway into the rampaging river waters
of the Ohio. Jarvis had been a teacher in Knox County for 28
years prior to going to Louisville to accept a math job at
Valley High, one of the larger high schools in Jefferson County.
Before going to Louisville Taylor was very active in the local
Baptist Church, serving for several years as a deacon and was
Sunday School secretary for 25 years. He was an active member
of the local Kiwanis Club and was a strong and enthusiastic
sport fan and outdoor type man. He was especially interested
in the recreation programs for the hundreds of students which
came to his classrooms throughout his years in the profession.
For three years Mr. Jarvis was principal at Barbourville High
School, and he taught in Lynn Camp, served as superintendent
there, and superintendent at Lone Jack, in Bell County. He had
taught in Valley High School for three years prior to his death.
Mr. Jarvis graduated from the old Barbourville Baptist Institute,
which is now Knox Central, from Union College and received his
degree at the University of Kentucky in mathematics. Got
Certificate at 17. Jarvis was only 17 when he was granted a Knox
County first-class teaching certificate. At 18, he taught in a
rural Knox County school for $40 a year while attending Union
College. He was active in numerous civic and charitable
organizations. He was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church.
Headed Checker Club. At Valley he was head of the Checker Club
and was active in promoting student recreational activities. He
was a member of the Jefferson County, Kentucky, and National
education associations and of the Classroom Teachers Association.
Jarvis' wife, Mrs. Arah Dinsmore Jarvis, is a sixth-grade teacher
at Jefferson County elementary school. Their son, Bob Jarvis,
teaches art and English at Southern High School. The elder Jarvis'
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Matt Jarvis, Barbourville. A sister is
Mrs. Bill Moore, Oolitic, Ind. Four brothers are Oscar Jarvis,
Bedford, Ind., Thomas and Charles Jarvis, both of Hamilton, Ohio
and George Jarvis, Detroit.
