This web site records the history of a SAUNDERS family which has lived in Plymouth, Brixham and Dartmouth, South Devon, since the early 1800s. They can be traced back to an Ann SAUNDERS whose sons were born in the region of Chawleigh, Devon. Although some of the family remain in Dartmouth and Brixham, most are now dispersed all over the country and indeed the world.
The Devonshire pronunciation of the family name is something like Saanders,
and it was occasionally misspelt SANDERS right up until the mid-1800s.
The convention has been adopted here of spelling each
person's surname SAUNDERS, whatever it says in their documentation. Also,
different people with the same names are distinguished
by numbers in brackets before the surname.
Information reported here has come from church and civil registers, censuses, a family bible, newspaper reports, various other documents, and oral history. Details of sources are available on request.
For privacy reasons, vital statistics are given only for persons known to be deceased. Further details may be available to bona fide enquirers on request. Please contact the compiler if you have any more information to share about anyone in this family history.
