3.3 John (2) SAUNDERS
(John (1) SAUNDERS , Ann
) was born in 1849 in Chawleigh, Devon. He died in 1891 somewhere in the Exeter
St Thomas registration district.
John learned shoemaking from his father, but in 1881 he was recorded as a provision merchant and in 1891 he was unemployed. He lived in Chawleigh until some time between 1881 and 1887, when he and his family moved to The Villas, Ide (in the Exeter St. Thomas district). There he died at the early age of 42.
John married Harriet (2) in about 1875. Harriet was born either in Crediton
or Hittisleigh, Devon, in 1848.
After her husband died, Harriet opened a grocery shop to support her family.
John and Harriet had the following children:
3.6 William James Pepperell SAUNDERS (William SAUNDERS , Ann ) was born on 19 Dec 1849 in Brixham, Devon. He died on 22 Feb 1921 in Dartmouth, Devon, from pneumonia after a few days illness.
William's surname was spelt SANDERS on his birth certificate, but mostly SAUNDERS thereafter. The significance of the forename "Pepperell" has not yet been determined.
William seems to have alternated between the sea and the land. He was recorded as a cabin boy in 1860 and a fisherman in 1891, but as a shoemaker (living with his uncle John in Chawleigh) in 1871, a gardener working for a public institution in 1881 and 1883, a general labourer in 1896, and a chimney sweep several times between 1899 and his death in 1921. William lived in Brixham for the first 45 years of his life, living in Kings Street (1851), in Sheepy Lane (1861), at 18 Milton St. (1881) and at 22 Temperance Place (1891). He moved to Dartmouth about 1895, living at St Saviours Court (1896), 1 Charles St. (1902 and 1909), Fairfax Place (1914) , and Newcomen Lodge, 49 Newcomen Road (1918-1921). To make a little extra money, he is said to have wheeled his barrow from Dartmouth to Dittisham (about 8 km) to sweep a few chimneys and then walk back again. One of his children remembered him as a lovely placid man with a white beard and snow white hair. His death was reported in the Dartmouth Chronicle.
William married Ann Maria PHILLIPS, daughter of Brixham
fisherman Richard James PHILLIPS and Sarah Ann Layton Godwin née LAYTON on 2 Oct
1883 in Brixham. Ann was born on 5 Jul 1858 in Nile Street, Hull, Yorkshire, and
died on 11 Mar 1932 in Dartmouth after a long illness. Her
death was also reported in the
Dartmouth Chronicle. For further details on Ann Maria and her family history,

M viii Wilfrid John SAUNDERS was born on 12 Sep 1899 in Dartmouth. He worked in his brother Sam's tobacconist and hairdressing shop until he joined up in World War I and became Private 44465 of the 2nd/5th Bn., Gloucestershire Regiment. Sadly, he was killed by a sniper's bullet on 2 Sep 1918, as an obituary records. His death deeply affected the family, as a letter from his sister Annie to his brother Sam indicates. A letter from the Imperial War Graves Commission records his last resting place as Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, Northern France.

3.7 Emanuel Gregory SAUNDERS (William SAUNDERS , Ann ) was born on 8 Oct 1851 in Brixham, Devon, and died in 1909 in the Totnes district (probably in Brixham).
Emanuel was a master mariner. It is said that his brother William supported him during his apprenticeship and studies for his captain's ticket. All the available records show him living in Brixham: at Sleepy Lane in 1861 and at 15 Torbay Crescent (later called North View Road) in 1883, 1890 and 1891. He was also living in Brixham in 1901.
Emanuel married Margaret ROWSE on 16 May 1876 in Brixham. Margaret was born in 1842 in Brixham, the daughter of baker Josias ROWSE and his wife Peggy. It is rumoured that Margaret considered herself "high born" and would have nothing to do with the rest of the SAUNDERS family.
Emanuel and Margaret had the following child:
4.14
F i Margaret R SAUNDERS was born in Brixham in 1878. In 1901, she was still unmarried and living with her parents in Brixham.
3.8 Robert Gregory SAUNDERS (William SAUNDERS , Ann ) was born on 13 Aug 1853 in Brixham and died in 1941 in the Totnes district.
Robert was a bootmaker. After his marriage, he and his wife lived for a time (at least 1880-1882) in Hull, Yorkshire, staying with his wife's brother Alfred and his family and starting their own family. By 1884, the family had moved to St. George's Square, Dartmouth (later incorporated into Newcomen Road). There, after a time as a general labourer, Robert established a new bootmaker's business. Like his brother William, he was reported to be a regular worshipper at Flavel Memorial Congregation Church in Dartmouth.
Robert married Louisa Jane CORNISH some time between 1871 and 1881. Louisa was born in 1855 in Paignton, Devon. Robert and Louisa had the following children:
4.15
M i William Conway SAUNDERS was born on 8 Apr 1880 in Hull, Yorkshire. In 1901, when he was unmarried and living with his parents in Dartmouth, he was reported to be a marine engine fitter.

M ii Ernest SAUNDERS was born on 5 Mar 1882 in Hull. In 1901, he was also unmarried and living with his parents in Dartmouth and reported to be a shipwright. There is some suspicion he may have emigrated to Canada.
