MAGÜI AND THE FED CUP
Magüi loves the Fed Cup. It is a mutual thing.
In the 90s, Spain won the Fed Cup competition five times. The last time in 1998:
Magüi Serna is one of the only three players in Spain's Fed Cup
success history to ever obtain a decisive point in a Fed Cup
eliminatory on the way to a Fed Cup victory(the other two being Arantxa Sánchez Vicario and Conchita Martínez).
Magüi has played in the Spanish Fed Cup team for 5 years now
(1997 to 2000 and 2002), with a W-L record of 8-8 (5-5 in singles, 3-3 in
doubles). She won the title in 1998 and has been a finalist twice: 2000 and 2002. Check Magüi's profile in the Official Fed Cup website.
FED CUP RESULTS: SINGLES
Year 2002
Back to the format of previous years:
First Round: Spain had to play Hungary in the first round. Magüi did make the team this time around, giving Spain the definitive point into the QF. Montolio lost the first match, but Arantxa won both her matches and Magüi with her win put the 3-1 for Spain in the scoreboard that guaranteed moving into the QF.

Quarterfinal: In the quarterfinals, Spain had to play Germany, again in Spain. Marta Marrero and Arantxa took out the germans in the singles, winning the four points, Magüi teamed up with Vivi for the doubles, defeating Bianka LAMADE / Barbara RITTNER (GER) 6-3 6-3, giving Spain the fifth point in a 5-0 victory over Germany and guaranteeing a place in the final phase to be played in Maspalomas (ESP).
Semifinal: Austria was the rival of Spain in the SF. Conchita and Arantxa won each one of their singles matches, arriving to the doubles tied 2-2. Fortunately, Vivi and Conchita teamed up to take out the tired Austrians Wartusch/Schett out of contention, placing Spain in it's 10th Fed Cup final (Magüi's 3rd). What a record. What a team.
Final: It was not to be. Spain had its chances, with Conchita giving Spain the early lead 1-0, but Arantxa's injury coupled with the nerves led Spain to being defeated 3-1 by Slovakia and to a tie in its final Fed Cup appearances: 5 wins to 5 loses. Magüi is now 1 win to 2 loses. Great showing in any case and good luck for the future!

Year 2001
In 2001, the Fed Cup was played in a RR format (back to confusing the format... pfff). Spain had direct access to the final phase as a finalist from the previous year. Unfortunately, Magüi was not chosen for the team and had to sat out this year, Spain did not qualify for the final.
Year 2000
In year 2000, Magüi only played doubles.
First, partnering
Cristina Torrens-Valero, in the RR eliminatory of Bali (Italy).
Together, they won a match and lost another one.
In the finals of the Fed Cup, played in the USA (Las Vegas), Magüi played in the SF vs. the Czech Republic. She played with Virginia Ruano, losing the match 6-1 3-6 6-7 to Bedanova/Hdrlikova. In spite of that, Spain classified for the Final, facing the USA Team in it.
Unfortunately, Spain couldn't win again the title and with both Conchita Martínez and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario injured, the final was lost 5-0. Magüi got to play in the doubles match, playing with Virginia Ruano against the USA team of Jennifer Capriati and Lisa Raymond, losing 4-6 6-4 6-2. In any case, congratulations to all four of them for making it to yet another final and to Magüi for playing in the decisive final. Here's a pic of that day:
Year 1999
In 1999, neither Arantxa nor Conchita played the Fed Cup. Magüi
became the n.1 player for Spain for that edition.
Spain lost in the QF vs. Italy (played in Italy).

Year 1998
This was a special year for the Spanish Team in general and for
Magüi in particular. In 1998, Spain won its fifth Fed Cup title of
the decade, being without any shadow of a doubt, the best team in the
world during the decade.

Magüi had a vital part in this achievement. She gave Spain two
decisive points winning both of her singles matches.
In the QF eliminatory,
vs. Germany, Magüi Serna was the n.2 player for the Spanish Team (due
to the fact that Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario was injured). She
held her nerve, and while Conchita failed to give Spain any individual
point, Magüi won both of her singles matches and leaded Spain in the
doubles that gave Spain the decisive point and the access to the SF.
