 "Round and Round" - January 8, 2006
Lately, we have been surveying the whole metro for the best and finest donut houses. As of now, we consider three of them as those that produce the sweetest and best-tasting donuts in the Philippines. Join me as I give my take on the different tastes and styles of donuts in Cello's, Hotloops, and Gonuts Donuts.
Cello’s Donuts boasts its wide variety of unique flavors like M&M, cookies and cream, and carrot donuts to name a few. Named after its 24 year-old owner, Cello’s Donuts also offers a variety of pastries – bagel, muffins, and cakes – and refreshments – coffee, cappuccino, iced tea, and Milo. But then again, the stars of the show are its flavorful donuts which sell at P16 each. All in all, there are a total of 15 donut flavors which come in hoops (with a hole in the middle) and loops (those without).
My Take: My favorites are the chocolate, chocolate sprinkled and peanut butter-flavored donuts. I usually match them with a cup of Milo or iced tea, with a grand total not costing me more than P50. How’s that for a complete, sweet but affordable meal? However, the thing I like most about it is its accessibility to UP students like me. It’s just a ride away (around a kilometer and a half away) from my school, which entices me and my friends to visit the place every time we have a time to spend together.
Hotloops donut houses and booths may be found scattered in malls and even in convenient stores in the metro. It takes pride in offering its customers with cream-filled donuts with fillings like chocolate, caramel, and strawberry. With donut prices ranging from P16 to P17 a piece, every sweet tooth is sure to
My Take: Because it’s a bit uncomfortable to eat its gorgeous donuts at convenient stores like Mini Stop, we still have to go to its donut houses in malls like Robinsons Galleria. This, in part, slightly discourages us to visit the place. However, if we ever have the time and the extra money to spare for the additional fare, we make it a point to make the most out of our donut experience by ordering my favorite choco-caramel donut and matching it with a bottled of iced tea. Again, another cheap treat on our part.
Gonuts Donuts made a big boom in the market a couple of months back and due to creative and fresh marketing strategy, it easily captured the hearts and stomachs of donut lovers. Although perceived as a high-end store, it still takes pride in its 17-peso donuts that have flavors like hazelnut and pastilles.
My Take: This for me is perhaps the best donut house among the three because I enjoy the “extreme” sweetness of its donuts. And of course, I enjoy the whole ambience in its stores plus the creative and candy-for-the-eye look of its donut boxes is an added bonus.

It is a paradoxical but profoundly true and important principle of life that the most likely way to reach a goal is to be aiming not at that goal itself but at some more ambitious goal beyond it.
