To offer a bird for adoption, print and complete the Perch Search application form and drop it off at Arcata Animal Hospital, Fin-n-Feather, or Myrtle Avenue Pet Center in Eureka. (Blank forms are also available at those sites.) But first be sure you want to part with your bird. You may feel you must give up your feathered pet because he is screaming, biting, or exhibiting some other problem behavior. Or perhaps you are expecting a human addition to your family or must move. If you would like to explore ways of working to keep your bird despite these challenges, a Perch Search volunteer will call you. Fill out the listing form, writing "yes" in the space indicated.
If you must place your bird for adoption, please take the time to screen potential adopters carefully. You, and your bird, may need to meet with an adopter several times to insure a good match. Do not hesitate to ask for references (and call them) and the name of the adopter's vet. A home visit it recommended. Remember that Perch Search does NOT screen adopters even though they must attend a class and may have other discussions with Perch Search volunteers.
Before meeting with a potential adopter, create a list of questions based on your individual bird. One bird might be happy in a home of active children while another bird may prefer a quieter life. Some questions might include:
It is the view of Perch Search that every animal has intrinsic value. Parties to an adoption, however, must realize that the market value of a "second-hand" bird is often very low. In fact, some people pay substantial sums to sanctuaries to insure their birds will have a good home.
Yes, there is much to consider, whether you are placing or adopting a bird. Nonetheless, when everyone makes an effort to do what is best for the bird, wonderful things can happen.
