How powerful is the Triforce, you may ask.  Ganondorf sure seems to put a lot of stock in it, so it must be pretty strong.  Yet he always seems to lose.  And there seems to be some things which even the Triforce cannot overcome.  For instance, Ganondorf cannot break the seal that trapped him in the Sacred Realm.  Thus, this article is going to attempt to explain how powerful the Triforce is, if there are degrees of power, and so forth.  First, let's look at a few facts about its power.

Ganondorf had one piece in OoT.  He imprisoned Zelda, who also had a piece.  Yet he lost against Link, who had a piece.
Ganondorf could not break the seal of the Sages even when he had all three pieces.
OoT Link and/or Zelda could not break the spell on the Sleeping Zelda
LttP Link defeated Ganon without any of the Triforce.
The king used the Triforce and died of old age.  Ganon does not age.
LttP Link could not use the Triforce to awaken the Sleeping Zelda.
AoL Link could.
The Triforce holds the power of the goddesses.  "A very small but powerful essence of the gods" is in it.
"The Triforce's might makes mortal dreams come true."
The Triforce split when Ganondorf touched it, but he eventually got all the pieces.

So here's a few patterns.  The Triforce should be the most powerful force seeing as it comes from the goddesses, and should be more powerful than anything man made.  Yet it fails against the Master Sword, the seal on the sacred realm, and the sleeping Zelda spell.  That and nature (death and old age) is generally more powerful than the Triforce.  Now let's make some reasonable assumptions.

The original sages (including the evil wizard) spent a lot of time around the Triforce.  They knew it better than anybody.
The evil sage had a piece of the Triforce when he cast the sleeping spell.
The remaining sages had access to the Triforce when forging the Master Sword and the seal.
The second seal (made by OoT sages) is the same seal as the first one.

Do you see it?  The sleeping spell, the Master Sword, and the Seal all had the power of the Triforce behind it.  That is why Ganondorf lost against the Master Sword.  That is why none but AoL Link could break the sleeping spell.  That is why Ganon could not break the seal without the help of the seven daughters of the wise men.  Note that the original sages were probably the most experienced at using the Triforce.  Thus, their spells remained powerful down the road against inexperienced users such as Ganondorf and Link.  Yet as Ganon became more accustomed to the power of the Triforce, he was able to bend the seal somewhat to contact Agahnim.  However, the power of the Master Sword was always too great.

You will notice one glaring problem, and a problem that only has one acceptable solution.  Why is it that LttP Link could not wake up Zelda while AoL Link could?  What's the difference.  Here's my theory.  There is a fundamental difference between having and using the Triforce and using the united Triforce in its fullest power.  "When these three [pieces] are brought together, the Triforce will show its maximum power."  This quote is from the AoL manual.  Yet there doesn't seem to be much difference, as Ganon lost against OoT and LoZ Link with one piece and LttP Link with all three.  So he must mean something different.  Ganon could collect all three pieces, but the goddesses must have built in another precaution against this.  Thus, he may have had all three pieces, but that is not much more power than just one.  Yet if an almost perfect person had it, the Triforce would show its maximum power.  LttP Link must not have been perfect.  In fact he even left Hyrule to improve himself, as mentioned in the LA manual.  AoL Link was, or at least was close enough.  He could use the maximum power of the Triforce, which was much more than the sum of its parts.  Thus, he could break the spell on the sleeping Zelda.

Thus, here's a brief summary.  The Triforce is more powerful than any other magic the races can use.  However, if a spell or object is made with the Triforce, than that spell or object becomes as powerful.  Use of the Triforce takes some skill, and there are degrees of ability that one can have with it.  More than one piece does not necessarily mean more power, although it can.  When a heart that is not in balance touches the Triforce, the Triforce splits.  Yet even one whose heart is balanced may have an evil streak, and so is not able to use the maximum power of the Triforce.  Very few people in Hyrule can use the true, unified, maximum power of the Triforce.  AoL Link was one of them.
