Well, Nintendo, at least Nintendo of America, has finally done it. They have admitted that there is a timeline for the Zelda games. That's the good news. The bad news is, it's horrible. As in, it blatantly contradicts many, many things in the Zelda universe. Yes, this is Nintendo saying this, but that doesn't mean that they're right. For one, I think this site is maintained by Nintendo Power, not Nintendo itself. Also, it's not EAD, or specifically, Miyamato, approved, so it doesn't count. Besides, when it comes to trusting the games and instruction manual or trusting some PR guy at Nintendo who was given the task of making a good web site, I'll take the games. So before you blindly believe everything Nintendo says, here are some problems. Impa. Impa was about 40 or so in OoT, and did not age much in that 7 years. Yet two years BEFORE that, she was an old woman. We know her family served the Royal family for many years, so two Impa's is not out of the question. Link. The timeline suggests "many years" passed between LttP and the two original games. Yet his age was mentioned as being 15. 5 years between OoT and LoZ is "many" years? Besides, his hair changed. Zoras. They changed from being a pleasant race, to mainly suspicious xenophobic creatures, to downright hostile. This doesn't happen in 5 years. It takes centuries. Gorons. Where are they? They would just leave in a few years? Don't think so. Vast migration would take longer. Sleeping Zelda. This is the most obvious error. The Zelda II instruction manual CLEARLY STATES THAT IMPA'S FAMILY HAD BEEN PASSING THE LEGEND DOWN FOR GENERATIONS!!! Yet this timeline seems to suggest Zelda was asleep for about a week. This is my major complaint. Triforce of Courage. Another obvious error. Nobody in the LoZ and AoL time period knew about it. Not even Link, who would have been the owner of it for some time. Besides, if this was all one Link, another Triforce mark on his hand would not surprise and worry him. Sage/Wise Man. Name changes happen, but over a long period of time. Time had to have passed until the position of Sage became Hylian only, not to mention hereditary. Same argument goes for Sacred Realm/Golden Land. Name changes don't happen overnight. Imprisoning War. Go read the LttP instruction manual. It explains the Imprisoning War, which were the events that happened in OoT (or the alternate future that happened when Zelda sent Link back, but that's another story). The line right after that? "Centuries passed." That's a killer right there. Amnesia. Link didn't know about the Master Sword in LttP. He didn't know Zelda. Amnesia? Or different Links? Link was also a stranger to Hyrule in the first game. Strange if he already lived there. Names. In Zelda II, many of the town names were named after Sages. It's not uncommon for a town to name itself after famous people. But everyone renaming towns in less than 5 years? Not going to happen. I could go on, but this is enough. I expected Nintendo would look into the situation a bit more. And they will here from me. I promise. |
