In the beginning of time, three goddesses came down from the heavens and created the world of Hyrule. Din, the goddess of power, created the land. Farore, the goddess of courage, created life to live on the land. And Naryu, the goddess of wisdom, created the laws of science and wizardry to give order to the world. Then the goddesses departed. Where they left, they left a remnant of their power: the Triforce. This small but powerful manifestation of the goddesses had the power to grant any wish given by any who touched it. As life grew on the land of Hyrule, six intelligent races emerged. From the forest dwelled the Kokiri, guarded and protected from time by the Great Deku Tree. This powerful tree kept the Kokiri at a young age, where they remained playing deep within the forest. Amid the mountains were the Gorons, a strange race who ate rocks. The Zoras came from the sea, a race that can breath under water and swim exceptionally well. The Gerudo chose the desert as their home; a people made entirely of females, although a male is born about every 100 years. The Sheikah were the shadow people, a mysterious race. But the race destined to be the greatest of all, the race that was said to be favored by the goddesses, was the Hylians. Elven in appearance, their long ears were said to be able to hear the words of the goddesses. Meanwhile, the Triforce rested where the goddesses left it, hidden inside another realm, the sacred realm. [ The Hylians, and presumably many of the other races, knew of its existence, and searched in vain for it. Legends grew surrounding this mysterious artifact. However, seven people, at least one of whom was skilled in wizardry, stumbled across an entrance into the Sacred Realm. There, high above, they saw the legendary triangles shining above them, making the entire sky golden in appearance. These people brought the Triforce back to Hyrule, a large kingdom of the Hylians and in alliance with the rest of the races, and gave it to the king. ] The king of Hyrule was a wise and powerful king and used the Triforce well. Peace and prosperity reigned in the land. Yet all things come to pass, and eventually the king died. He left an heir, the crown prince, and his sister, named Zelda. [ The prince inherited the kingdom, but when he came to use the Triforce, it split. Only one who has all three virtues, power, wisdom, and courage, in balance could yield the Triforce.] The prince did not understand and was left with only one of the Triforce pieces. He searched for the missing parts, but it was in vain. At last, a wizard close to the king told the prince that his father had told Zelda something about the Triforce shortly before he died. The prince questioned his sister, but she would say nothing. The wizard threatened to put her in a deep sleep, but still she would not say. So the wizard started to cast a spell. The prince tried to stop him, but the wizard fought him off and continued chanting. The princess fell into a deep sleep from which she might never awaken. At the same time, the wizard fell to the ground and died. The prince was beside himself with grief. He laid the princess on a pedestal in the North Castle, hoping someday she might recover. So that the event would never be forgotten, he ordered that every female born of the royal household be named Zelda. [ Meanwhile, the seven people who first found the Sacred Realm discovered what had happened. The prince realized that the power of the Triforce was too great to handle and agreed that it should be sealed away. The seven brought the pieces back together and placed them back in the Sacred Realm. Before they sealed it away, they realized when the time might come that the Triforce would be needed. Yet they must be certain that the one who comes for the Triforce cannot be evil. Thus they devised a nearly foolproof plan. They made five keys or items that were necessary to enter the Realm. Three of these were stones, representing power, wisdom, and courage. These they gave to the Gorons, Zoras, and Kokiri, respectively, to guard them. They became known as spiritual stones. The next key was a musical instrument, the Ocarina of Time. Now the seven people realized that an evil person could easily capture all of these and open the door to the Sacred Realm. Thus the fifth and final key was to insure against that. They forged a powerful sword, which they called the Master Sword, and sealed it in the pedestal of time. This Sword could only be pulled if the three stones were present, and could only be pulled by a righteous person, one who held the three forces of power, wisdom, and courage in balance, and one who had no evil in his heart. For the sword also had another feature; it repelled all evil. Thus, it was also known as the Sword of Evil's Bane. The seven people's reasoning was simple. Someday it may be necessary to use the Triforce. If so, then it would require the cooperation of all of the races, thus the spiritual stones. Moreover, only a righteous person could open the door, the person destined to be the Hero of Time. It seemed as if the seal could never be broken for evil reasons. To further protect the Triforce, they hid the location of the Master Sword by building a temple around it, and sealing the Master Sword behind a magical door called the Door of Time. Only a sacred song, played on the Ocarina of Time, could open those doors. Furthermore, they told this only to a few people, and many soon forgot. They also realized that the Hero of Time, when he would go to claim the Triforce, may need help. Thus, they created a spell that would awaken seven people, one from each race and a member of the royal family, to their knowledge and power. To preserve the knowledge forever, they wrote the Book of Mudora, which housed the legends of the Triforce. Their work was done, and the Triforce was safe. Only Kreapora Grebora worried, and so reincarnated himself over and over as an owl to protect the Triforce. ] |
