In 1986, the first of the Zelda series was released for the original Nintendo.  And it was a huge hit.  This was the first game to come with a battery, and so was the first game that involved saving.  It also had a more complex storyline than a Mario - like save the princess.  As Link, you had to find all of the pieces of the hidden Triforce of Wisdom.  Only then could you fight Ganon and save the land of Hyrule and, of course, Zelda.  One need only to look at the instruction manual to see that this was something different.  The first two pages detailed the storyline with a beautiful drawing of Hyrule in the background.  The next 8 or so pages dealt with gameplay, all in the context of Hyrule and Link.

The graphics were superb for an 8 bit Nintendo.  Sure, they were nothing compared to today's standards, but they were still good.  The music was great, with the intro, overworld theme, dungeon theme, and a cool 9th level theme.  And it was difficult to beat.  I am convinced that this is the hardest Zelda game ever.  For those who have only played Link to the Past or Zelda 64, imagine no cracks telling you where to bomb.  Imagine 5 darknuts (ironknuckles) in one room, with beams of energy being shot at you as well.  Imagine hidden dungeons with no Navi to tell any clues.  And then imagine finally beating the game and finding yourself back at the beginning, only this time it was four times as hard. This game had all of this and more.  Without a strategy guide, it was next to impossible.  So look around in here and see if anything helps.
