Welcome! This page is meant to be a resource for those working in the
field of nonverbal communication. Researchers can use this page to
connect with their colleagues, search relevant journals,
find out about the latest books published in the field, and obtain
information about resources for teaching and training. Send me your link
if you work in the field!
To see the current contents of the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior
now maintained by Kluwer Press,
click here. For pre-1999 contents use the unofficial JNB page
Attention: Students. If you are writing a paper on nonverbal
communication, the best thing to do is to stop surfing the net and
go to the section "BF636.C45" in your local university library, where
you will find plenty of good books on nonverbal communication. Or use
this page to locate some relevant journal articles.
Nonverbal Communication BLOG
March 2006
Update - I have been learning a lot about web design and plan on doing a major update this year. In terms of content, please send me mhecht (at sign) sonic.net your information about ongoings in the field of nonverbal communication- books, conferences, other notables.
2005
Well I am engaging in a lot of nonverbal communication with the birth of my second son Dylan on May 16, 2005. All of my family and regular job duties have delayed me from updating this web page.
2004
There is a 'Handbook of Nonverbal Behavior' book currently being written by the heavyweights in the field. I don't have any more details at this time, except that it will be quite thorough.
The last two issues of this year for JNB are dedicated to Interpersonal Sensitivity. Click
here for details.
Blogs are now popular, so I am renaming the 'News' section to 'Nonverbal Communication BLOG.' which is essentially what it has been.
I need some new content--news items, announcements, book updates. If you work in the field of nonverbal communication, psychology, or communication, please email me news at mhecht@sonic.net
In my present job at Oracle, I have become an expert on audiovisual and computer equipment as it pertains to capturing human behavior. If you are setting up a lab to study communication and have questions about equipment, email me. If enough people are interested, I will put together a basic guide.
2003
Paul Ekman, the world's foremost expert on facial expression and emotion, has published a new book called "Emotions Revealed" summarizing the results of his extensive research in layman's terms. Click
here for details.
Also notable is that software companies have begun to take notice and have hired Ekman to act as a consultant for making facial expressions in video games more realistic. It's about time. Click
here
for details.
I have just received word that the 4th edition of Hickson, Stacks, & Moore's "Nonverbal Communication: Studies and Applications" will be published
in early July (ISBN 1-891-487-20-5). For desk copies or ordering, contact
Roxbury Publishing
After 11 years of work with Marianne LaFrance, and two years of work with Betsy Paluck, our meta-analysis of gender and smiling has now been published in Psychological Bulletin. Click
here
to see the abstract, and
here for a press article on it in the LA times. Email me for reprints.
I continue to be amazed at the number of people that find this site and thank me for maintaining it. I will be doing some updates shortly.
2002
Our son, Maxwell Alexander, was born March 7, and this is motivating
me to update these pages again (see my personal pages for pictures).
2001
I will be here in San Francisco the week of APA if any other nonverbal
scholars are coming to town and would like to catch up.
Well I guess the big news item is that I have left Louisiana College to work at a high-tech company in Silicon Valley. I still plan to publish in the field of nonverbal communication (as well as my new field of human-computer interaction), so I have decided to maintain this page at a new home on GeoCities. I never dreamed that my nonverbal site would have garnered such a following! I will slowly update the links and material as time permits, so keep checking back.
2000
Jaume Masip sent me a new address for nonverbal communication
and the site (see below) has been extensively updated.
I apologize for the lack of updates. Over the last year I have
become very involved in a NAB-sponsored study of HDTV, I will
post the results shortly in a press release on my personal page.
On a sad note, my esteemed colleague Dr. Sara E. Snodgrass
died of cancer in February of this year--we will all miss her as
a person and as a friend.
1999
Judith Hall and Ron Riggio are editing a book on interpersonal sensitivity
which will be out next year.
The book "The social context of Nonverbal Behavior" by Cambridge University
Press is now available.
On October 14-17, the Society for Experimental Social Psychology will
be holding its annual meeting in St Louis, Missouri.
The annual meeting of the American Psychological Association
starts this Thursday August 19th. As my classes start on this same day,
I will be unable to attend. But there should be many nonverbal
researchers there as Boston as a high concentration of nonverbal
scholars.
The spring 1999 issue of the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior is out.
an updated list of contents.
It is confirmed that the American Psychological Association will
be publishing a journal called "Emotion." As soon as an editor is
selected and can get his/her office running, manuscripts will be
accepted
There will be a conference on gestures April 1-5, 2000 in
Portugal. A group of scholars are forming an interdisciplinary
effort to have a conference as well as possibly a journal devoted
to gesture research. The conference will also include a component
on human-computer interaction. Click herefor the
call for papers.
I notice the next International Communication Conference is
in San Francisco in May 1999, and then Acupulco in 2000! The
American Psychological Association Convention is in August 1999 in
Boston
In the movie "Meet Joe Black", there is a very good demonstration
of postural synchrony in the coffee shop scene at the beginning. Look for
it!
The 10th international conference on Perception and Action will
be held August 8-13 in Edinburgh, Scotland and will have a number of
sessions/speakers on posture.

The February issue of Psychology Today has an article on flirting this
month, citing Givens, Perper, Moore as well as Steven Gangestead.
I am getting a lot of positive feedback about this site, but I
sometimes struggle with news items - if you have any, please send them
to me.
Happy New Year! The Winter 1998 issue of the Journal of
Nonverbal Behavior arrived in my mail box and I have updated
the table of contents - click here.
Elizabeth Cashdan has an article on smiling, posture, and
status.
There is also an announcement about a price increase
for the 1999 year for JNB, but the benefit is that the number
of pages will be increased by 14% due to increased flow of
excellent papers. The new personal rate is $62. However, if you
are a member of the International Communication Association (see
link below) you can reduce the rate slightly.
It looks like John Dovidio's term as editor at the Personality
and Social Psychology Bulletin is ending, as the new editor
Jerry Suls takes over and the journal color changes from red
to brownish green now in January.
I have updated some of the links at the very bottom of this page
having to do with online essays/fun stuff.
1998
The American Psychological Association will start a new journal

David Givens is currently opening The Center for Nonverbal Studies
(CNS), described as "a private, nonprofit research center located in
Spokane, Washington and La Jolla, California. Underway since October 1,
1997, the Center's mission is to advance the study of human communication
in all its forms apart from language." The links for Givens, the Center,
and related material are updated below.
It looks like the Western Psychological Association is going to
have a meeting in April 99 in Irvine which will feature a number
of researchers who have studied nonverbal behavior, including
Robert Rosenthal, Marianne LaFrance, and Ronald Riggio. A web page
is available
here
Our college here is making some changes, so in order to access this
page, you may need to type in the actual network number

I have been unable to get someone to sponsor me for SESP
98 in Kentucky. If I can be your "guest" please email me at
hecht@socpsych.lacollege.edu
The Journal of Nonverbal Behavior is going to have
special issue on gestures and one on aging.
The society for personality and social psychology has updated their
web site and moved it. I have updated the link below.
Dr. David Givens is starting a newsletter called "Gestures" which
will provide updates on the field-this should be up by the late fall.
Dr. Paul Ekman was recently given a Festshrift at the APS conference.
A number of students and colleagues gave papers.
