My Mother was an iris lover and I have always had some in my yard. About fifteen years ago, I decided I wanted some of the newer, larger, and more beautiful ones. Needless to say, I ordered and ordered. I now have 81 Japanese irises and 465 bearded irises. I made beds in my garden and more in my yard. When they are blooming, they are beautiful beyond words. I believe there are about fourteen types of irises and I have thirteen of them. I like the tall bearded ones and the standard dwarf bearded. I also like the miniature dwarf for edging. If you have not grown Japanese iris, you do not know what you have missed. When these plants bloom you marvel at their beauty and size. Some are dinner plate size and the markings remind you of the patterns on a butterfly. The only bad thing about them is that they should be moved to a different location every four years and 2002 is the year I must move, divide, and sell some of mine. They do need acid soil and lots of water. One of the wonderful things about iris and daylilies is that they can be moved almost anytime. It is good to sell them when they are blooming so buyers can choose what they want.
