Edmonten
Edmonton, the Capital of Alberta, was a positive surprise. After traveling thousands
of miles through the plains, we enjoyed high live in Edmonton.
In the Historical Village we got an
impression of Edmonton of how it looked like around 1900. In this museum they
rebuilt houses that were located in the center of the town at this time. First
you take the historical train which takes you to old Fort Edmonton. A old
street leads you through Edmonton of 1885,
1895 and 1910. In the houses you can talk to actors that tell you about life at
that time and the meaning of all the requisites in the house.
At the beginning of September there is a cool street festival in Old Stratcona.
In this part of Edmonton you can find the pubs and discotheques where the
students go to. We enjoyed several street performances and plays. We could
really the vibrations send out by students life in Edmonton - great.
Calgary
Compared to Edmonton, Calgary seemed to be a boring town. We tried hard to
find the places where the students party and have a drink at night. The town
center is mostly occupied by skyscrapers, bank buildings, shopping malls and
fast food restaurants. I was a bit disappointed because I had expected a more
exciting town, in which the Olympic Winter Games have taken place!
Badlands
We took the chance to visit the badlands, which are situated 150km east of
Calgary. As you can see on the pictures, the landscape of the Badlands is
impressive. Erosion has created scurrile forms from the sandy ground.
For example the Hoodoos are result of erosion. A resistant layer
protects layers below from the influence of weather. The ground around the cap
is taken away by rain and storm an leaves these little mushrooms. When
traveling through the Badlands the Royall Tyrell Museum
in Drumheller is worth a visit. You cannot miss it because if you are
within 150km distance from Drumheller signs will lead you to the museum. Just
from this fact you can imagine what an extraordinary attraction the museum must
be! In the museum they show fossils that were found in the Badlands, especially
bones of dinosaurs. The Badlands belong to the richest sources of dinosaur
findings in the world. The exhibit provides interesting background information
on earth's history.
