Helsinki, August 25 - September 1, 2000

Little did we know when we arrived in Helsinki that the city would be celebrating its 450th Birthday. Imagine that, a city twice as old as America and 4 times older than Australia! There were parades and parties every day we were in Helsinki.

Marghe parties in the streets Helsinki celebrates 450 years We saw two beautiful Cathedrals in the distance from our hotel room. Cathedrals from our hotel
So, of course, we had to set out to find and explore them. We learned that one was Lutheran and the older, Greek Orthodox. We set out walking to the farthest Cathedral first, the Greek Orthodox. Marghe showed us the way up the many steps.

Marghe at Greek Cathedral We had to rely on pictures of the outside to remind us of this beautiful Cathedral. since photographs were strictly forbidden inside. Greek Orthodox Cathedral We sat quietly in this church for the length of a traditional Greek Orthodox wedding. Our last before this was with cousins Greg and Vicky Glod. With the Glods' marriage, we were seated and served a meal fit for kings and queens. Unfortunately, we were not invited to this wedding party's feast. We returned home to our hotel, planning to visit the Lutheran Cathedral the next day.
