Sexual Immorality

By Timothy Glover

Again, we feel compelled to write on a very sensitive subject that stirs emotions and creates strong animosities. Too many view one’s sexual preference as a personal choice that no one has a right to attack. The freedoms in America have been used as a cloak to violate the upright principles of chastity. Professed Christians and churches endorse homosexual practices, ignore adultery, and treat loose sex as a common way of life. Anyone who does not conform and speaks out against such practices are criticized and labeled as some, unkind, uncaring, critical fanatic. We are made to feel guilty to speak out against sin and in some cases punished for not falling in line with the status quo (Ex. of Reggie White). Everywhere we turn, we see gay rights, gay bars, and gay churches promoted and supported. But, whatever explanation and/or justification is offered, the Bible still condemns sexual immorality. God’s law is against fornicators (1 Tim. 1:9-11). Adulterers and fornicators God will judge (Heb. 13:4). John writes that God will consign fornicators to the lake of fire and brim-stone (Rev. 21:8; 22:15). Paul wrote that adulterers cannot inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9).

HOMOSEXUALITY

This is often called sodomy because of the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 19). During the judges, a case of it nearly destroyed the tribe of Benjamin (Judges 19:22).

Pederasty was a common practice among the Greeks. The relationships of young men to a mentor were often described as “lovers.” Paul explained that such practice was the result of rejecting the knowledge of God. He writes, “...likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the women, burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working unseemliness, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was due” (Rom. 1:26-27). He later adds, “They who practice such are worthy of death”. In 1 Cor. 6:9, Paul uses two words to describe it. One is translated “effeminate” which describes “catamites, men and boys who allow themselves to be abused homosexually” (Arndt & Gingrich Lexicon). The other is a term translated “abusers of themselves with men”. This is a “male homosexual, pederast, or sodomite” (A & G). The RSV condenses the two words into one phrase, “sexual perverts”.

There is much discussion about whether or not certain people are born with a natural desire for those of the same sex. Some have expressed a disbelief in God who would make them only to condemn them. While it may be that some boys appear to have such tendencies, we deny that one is born homosexual. It along until such practice becomes a habitual way of life. Granted, many habits are hard to break. Yet, it is one that needs breaking.
