.............................................................................................................................. ALLERGY More than 50 million Americans suffer from various types of allergies. That means one out of five! Of these 50 million sufferers, 35 million or 17% of the population have allergic rhinitis, more popularly known as hayfever. Allergic rhinitis is the single most common chronic disease experienced by Americans. What is even more shocking is that the occurrence of allergies in developed countries is sharply on the rise. WHAT CAUSES HAYFEVER? Hayfever is essentially a mistaken immune reaction to airborne particles, which normally do not cause the body any trouble. These particles may be: Most people inhale these without a problem. People with allergies inhale these and the body reacts as if it were being invaded by a pathogen: Many patients do not want to stay on medications for long periods of time. Happily, Chinese medicine provides a time-tested alternative. HOW DOES CHINESE MEDICINE WORK? Chinese medicine seeks to restore balance to the body. Therefore, the practitioner begins by doing a Chinese medical diagnosis to determine the patient’s individualized pattern of disharmony. Each individual is uniquely assessed and diagnosed. Based on that individualized pattern diagnosis, the practitioner will then craft a personalized treatment plan encompassing all aspects of the patient’s life. Chinese medicine can be very effective during an attack and for prevention. The goal is to have less frequency, severity, and duration. Chinese medicine provides a time-tested alternative when it comes to the treatment of hay fever and other allergies. HAYFEVER & DIET Chinese medical practitioners believe that, in most cases, the cause of hayfever is both diet and heredity related. In particular, they are advised to stay away from or minimize sugars and sweets, fruit juices, dairy products, nuts and oils, and chilled, uncooked foods. Although other factors, such as exercise and stress, play a part in many people’s hayfever, modification of one’s diet is usually the cornerstone of the Chinese medical treatment plan. Happily, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine make such dietary changes easier to implement. How do I know Chinese medicine can help allergies? Considerable research has been done in the People’s Republic of China on the effects of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine on hayfever and other respiratory allergies. National Institute of Health (NIH) had conducted experiments that confirm acupuncture’s usefulness. |
ASTHMA Asthma is a condition with difficulty breathing. It usually occurs at young age and not all the patient grows out of it. Acupuncture provides a solution. Oriental medicine has been successful in Asia for thousands of years and the general population is getting some of its benefits. The benefits are the improvement of breathing and the better functioning of the lungs. Improvement is accomplished with acupuncture and time-tested Chinese herbs. The usual course of treatment is up to 4 months and one should notice significant improvement within 3 weeks. National Institute of Health (NIH) states, “asthma, in which acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment or an acceptable alternative or be included in a comprehensive management program.” It is recommended that you keep your doctor informed of treatments and update your doctor of the progress. This practice does not make any claims to cure any disease. |
CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME Carpal tunnel syndrome, which encompasses a range of symptoms affecting the hands and wrists, is now the most common hand problem for a visit to the doctor. It has been estimated that millions of Americans presently have the syndrome, due primarily to their occupations. Typical symptoms are: The direct cause is pressure on the median nerve, which carries messages between the hand and brain. The carpal tunnel itself is a narrow opening in the wrist. The tunnel is situated on the palm side of the wrist, and nine tendons as well as the median nerve pass through it. If any of these tendons swells, or if an injury causes the space inside the tunnel decrease, the median nerve may become irritated or pinched, leading to inflammation, swelling, and pain. Anyone whose job or hobby calls for repeating the same motions over and over is vulnerable to the syndrome. Computer operators, pianists, and checkout clerks are among those who are at high risk. The median nerve may become irritated or pinched, leading to inflammation, swelling, and pain. SELF-TEST One simple test point to a diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome called Phalen’s test. You put the backs of your hands against each other with the wrists completely flexed. If you feel numbness, tingling, or pain within 60 seconds, the median nerve is probably compressed. ACUPUNCTURE Patients usually have immediate result after three treatments. In most cases, more than half the relief is expected after one month of acupuncture. Total treatment period is up to 2 or 3 months, depending on the severity of the condition. |
CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME Chronic fatigue syndrome (aka CFS) is characterized with main symptom of unremitting and disabling exhaustion. In some cases, the syndrome follows an infectious illness. In others, the symptoms appear during a time of unusual stress, or they may start gradually, with no perceivable cause. Possible connections are: Recent studies have discounted a number of earlier suspects, including infection with the Epstein-Barr virus or other viruses but these can be seen as related factors. About half the individuals diagnosed as having CFS seem to have had a pre-existing psychiatric disorder. Other patients develop depression and anxiety only after the syndrome has taken hold. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has compiled the following list of conditions that must be present to make a diagnosis: Oriental medicine treats CFS as a condition of both the imbalance in the body and the infection. Fatigued body makes viral infection more susceptible. If untreated, it can become precursor to many diseases. The goal of oriental medicine is to treat the disease and the imbalance. In most cases, patients notice significant relief within 3 weeks, and the total course of treatment is between 3 to 4 months. Treatment, meditation, exercise, stress avoiding activities, and individualized foods all contribute to treatment and prevention. Patients experience improved sleep, increased vitality, and short recovery time. |
COLD HANDS & FEET Raynaud’s (pronounced ray-nose) disease is a circulatory disorder characterized by spasms of arteries that carry blood to the fingers and toes. Exposure to cold or emotional stress triggers the spasms; the underlying mechanism may be similar to that of migraine headaches. Typical symptoms are In about 10 percent of patients, the skin of affected fingers and toes becomes smooth, shiny, and tight due to a loss of underlying tissue. Primary (Idiopathic), which has no identifiable cause, is comparatively mild and most common among young women. Secondary Raynaud’s, which is more potentially serious, is associated with some other ailment, such as a thyroid disorder, or is triggered by an identifiable circumstance, such as occupational hazards or the use of various drugs. Chinese herbs are effective in treating cold hands and feet. It takes between two to three months of herbal treatment. There is increased energy and circulation, thus helping the body retain heat for a long time. There is significant improvement after 4 weeks of treatment. The total treatment is between 2 to 3 months and the result lasts for a long time. |
DIZZINESS & VERTIGO One or more symptoms include: Occurrences can be incapacitating, lasting from several hours to several days and recurring with varying frequency. An attack may be precipitated by a rise in fluid in the labyrinth area of the inner ear, causing increased pressure and a disrupted sense of balance. It usually begins in mid-life and occurs about equally in men and women. This is diagnosed as obstruction in the meridian energy pathways that run through the ear. Often the cause is the adverse reaction to food allergens, infection, or diseases. Symptoms are often alleviated in a few sessions, and a series of treatments may reduce the frequency of attacks. Patients have significant relief within 3 weeks and the total treatment is up to 2 or 3 months. |
FEMALE HEALTH - DYSMENORRHEA Many women experience discomfort, usually abdominal cramps and a sensation of heaviness in the pelvic area, just before or during menstruation. Typically, symptoms subside after a day or two of menstrual flow. When cramps are severe and prolonged, however, the condition is called dysmenorrhea (difficult menstruation). Often, their menstrual cramps begin at the first age of blood flow. In theory, the typical menstrual cycle lasts for 28 days. In real life, however, menstrual cycles range from 25 to 30 days, although anything between 20 to 40 days is normal as long as the pattern is reasonably consistent. Physical and psychological associations: It is an excessive menstrual bleeding due to a prolonged period, very heavy flow, or a combination of the two. Menstrual bleeding is excessive if the woman must change her tampon or pad at least every hour. This can be brought on by psychological stress and physical illness. Treatment of both anxiety, depression, and the physical diseases naturally help to improve the drive without having to use stimulants. Physical examination and blood tests often reveal abnormal findings. Or the examinations may reveal no unusual findings. In both the cases, Chinese medicine has long been successful in treating these female reproductive conditions. The most common Chinese diagnosis are Qi stagnation, Blood Stagnation, Qi deficiency, and Yin deficiency. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs together are very helpful. When these conditions are corrected, the frequency and severity are reduced to manageable level or even eliminated. Women experience significant relief within 1 to 2 months of treatment Regularly scheduled treatments thereafter help further improvement. - MENOPAUSE Following symptoms are normal experiences going through menopause: Many women, however, have severe and unrelenting symptoms affecting Often, unpleasant symptoms persist for more than 5 years. Women experience significant relief within 2 weeks with acupuncture Maintenance program is scheduled after one month of treatment, ensuring maximum comfort and normalizing the duration of peri-menopause. Chinese medical diagnosis is yin deficiency or yang fire rising. The treatment approach is to help restore imbalance by providing more yin (cooling) in the meridians while quelling the rising yang (fire). - INFERTILITY A couple fails to achieve pregnancy during 1 year of attempt. Or the miscarriages prevent successful trimester and birth. It usually occurs in conjunction with menstrual problems and hormone imbalance. Chinese medicine is successful in 70% of cases. In Asia, a woman’s conception, pregnancy and delivery are a great event. Women take great care in preparation for pregnancy with nutritional foods and Chinese herbs. During pregnancy they receive acupuncture for morning sickness. After delivery, women typically rest a full month in bed with no exposure to wind or cold water. 2 to 3 months of treatment help prepare the body for successful pregnancy and birth |
FIBROMYALGIA Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), is a common condition mostly affecting women between 20-50 years of age. It is chronic, widespread, and severe characterized by: It is neither a rheumatic, inflammatory, progressive, or degenerative disorder. However, it is also not solely a psychosomatic or psychiatric disorder. In 1987, the American Medical Association (AMA) recognized FMS as a true illness and major cause of disability. Fibromyalgia can be differentiated from other chronic muscle-joint pain by the presence of pain or tenderness on pressure in at least 11 of 18 specific points on the body. 70-90% of FMS sufferers will also have one or more of the following: Because fibromyalgia involves a number of different symptoms, various medications for each of these symptoms are prescribed such as antidepressants, anti-inflammatories. Ironically, some of these side effects include many of the symptoms of FMS. According to Chinese medical theory, when energy does not move, there is pain. Therefore, disabling pain is simply treated by moving the static energy. Because every patient with FMS has a slightly different Chinese medical pattern discrimination, each patient receives their own individualized treatment. This treatment mainly consists of acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal formulas drank as a “tea” several times per day. In addition, practitioners will pay close attention to each patient’s diet and lifestyle in order to treat the whole person and eliminate the root of the condition. Typically, the Chinese medical treatment of fibromyalgia lasts several months in its active phase, and this may be followed up by several more months of taking Chinese herbs in pill or powder form preventatively. Patients have significant relief within 3 weeks and the total treatment is up to 3 or 4 months. ORIENTAL MEDICINE TREATS FIBROMYALGIA Chinese exercises such as Qi-Gong and Tai-Chi. Diet and stress management are crucial aspects of self- treatment. |
FROZEN SHOULDER Frozen shoulder begins as a slight pain and progresses to severe discomfort, which becomes worse when the shoulder is moved. Eventually, the shoulder stiffens to the point that it cannot be moved at all. It typically starts with a minor injury that leads to inflammation. The normal response is not to move the painful joint, thus allowing adhesions. This provides opportunity for the constricting bands of tissue to form. Adhesions make it even more difficult and painful to move the shoulder, and a vicious cycle develops. Eventually, the capsule lining the shoulder joint shrinks because of scar tissue resulting from the adhesions. VISCIOUS CYCLE: minor injury pain no movement fibrous tissues form adhesion more pain less range of motion more adhesion It is categorized in Oriental medicine as Qi stagnation or Blood stagnation. Once this condition is resolved, there is proper energetic flow, helping to increase range of motion with lessening of pain. Patients have significant relief within 3 weeks and the total treatment is up to 3 or 4 months. In one study of over 20,000 patients at UCLA, acupuncture reduced both the frequency and severity of of muscle tension, headaches, and migraines. Another study, involving 204 patients suffering from chronic painful conditions, resulted in 74% experiencing significant relief for over three months after acupuncture treatment. Doctors also have found that using acupuncture lowers the need for conventional pain-killing drugs and thus reduces the risk of side effects for patients who take the drugs. |
GASTRITIS Gastritis is a stomach inflammation that may produce bleeding, ulceration, and erosion of the lining. Severe erosive gastritis calls for prompt treatment to stop any bleeding. When bleeding is profuse, a stomach tube may be inserted and ice water passed through it to constrict any leaking blood vessels. There are varying Oriental medical diagnosis and each condition requires different approach to treatment. The main assessments are (1)Liver-Qi(energy) invading the Stomach, (2) Cold invading the Stomach, (3) Stomach-Heat, (4) Stomach-Fire, (5) Stomach-Phlegm Fire, (6) Damp Heat in the Stomach, (7) Stomach and Liver Heat, (8) Stomach Yin Deficiency. In these cases, the proper selection of acupuncture points and Chinese herbs can be an effective treatment. Patients notice significant result after two weeks. The total course of treatment is between 3 to 4 months with minimal recurrence thereafter. SELF TREATMENT Gastritis is usually concurrent with lifestyles the body eventually is not able to cope with, manifesting in digestive disorders. Simply changing diets, staying away from unhealthy habits, and going on mental exercise program along with treatments are an effective approach. |
HEADACHE A headache is any pain in the head, the discomfort of which can vary greatly. It may be dull or sharp, throbbing or constant, localized to a small area or engulfing the entire head. Some people suffer headaches only occasionally, while for others the problem is chronic. For some 20 million Americans each year, the pain of headache is severe enough to warrant a visit for treatments. And according to government estimates, some 64 million workdays are lost due to various types of headaches. SIMPLE TENSION is the leading cause of headaches. CLASSIC MIGRAINE is heralded by a warning aura, of dizziness, mood changes, loss of appetite, and visual distortions such as flashing lights and blindspots. COMMON MIGRAINE develops suddenly when the blood vessels open up, or dilate, thus resulting in expanded flow of blood and producing the throbbing pain. CLUSTER headaches are caused by abnormalities in the blood vessels of the head. Nicknamed “Suicide headaches” because of their severity, they appear in clusters just as their name applies. These headaches generally occur daily, sometimes several times a day, for weeks or months at a time and then suddenly disappear, only to recur weeks, months, or even years later. Oriental medical diagnosis is Qi stagnation or Blood stagnation. It is best to receive acupuncture treatments while one has attacks. It ensures proper diagnosis for the most effective treatment. The goal is to reduce intensity, frequency, and duration. Every succeeding week should be less pain than the previous week. The patient notices significant relief within 3 weeks, and total course of treatment is between 2-3 months. Once this condition is resolved, there is proper energetic flow, minimizing or preventing further attacks. |

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a motility disorder involving the intestines. Patients may experience variable degrees of Western medicine directly links between the GI tract and the central nervous system. Such a brain-gut connection would explain why emotional upsets affect the intestines and why intestinal systems affect the mood. The good news is that Chinese medicine has been proven to treat IBS safely and effectively. Chinese medical literature is virtually unanimous in its description of the Chinese medical mechanisms of this disorder. All Chinese sources say this condition is worsened by stress, improper diet, obsessive thinking, too much fatigue, propensity, and too little physical exercise. Because there are number of possible complicated patterns IBS sufferers may present, the first step in being treated with Chinese medicine is to get a personal pattern discrimination. After doing an individualized pattern discrimination, it may be treated with acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, or a combination of both. In addition, diet and lifestyle are certainly adjusted. Foods which damage the digestive system need to be avoided. When the patient starts noticing improvement, it is easier for the individual to do relaxation exercises. Patients have significant result after two to three weeks. Total treatment is between 3 to 4 months. A large amount of research has been done on the Chinese medical treatment of IBS, especially in the Japan, Korea, and People’s Republic of China. |
NECK PAIN Neck pain usually is related with whiplash accidents. It tends to persist and reappear often. Chronic neck pain without an obvious injury are related with stress factors and food. Excessive stress and allergic foods tense the muscles in the body. Muscles are more than the attachment to bones. Blood vessels, heart, stomach, and intestines are made up of muscles. Other organs, such as lungs, depend on the pleural muscles for proper breathing. When the tensions throughout the body are prolonged, then the tight muscles inhibit proper body functions. The pain exhibits most frequently in the neck and shoulder areas. Patients notice significant improvement after a few visits. Regularly scheduled maintenance helps to ensure maximum comfort. |
NEUROPATHY Inflammation involving nerves that serve parts of the body outside the brain and spinal cord are referred to as peripheral neuropathy or neuritis. Because the inflammation interferes with the transmission of messages along these nerves, symptoms may include: Acupuncture is one of the most effective alternative therapies for alleviating nerve pain. A series of treatment maybe all that is needed to provide lasting relief, especially caused by muscle spasms and stress. The National Institute of Health states that acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment or an acceptable alternative or be included in a comprehensive management program. Low back pain, joint pain, and soft tissue injury are the most common complaints treated in an acupuncture clinic. |
RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME Uncomfortable sensations prompt an irresistible urge to move one or both legs. The feelings are centered usually in the calf, although the thighs and feet are sometimes affected as well. Symptoms occur when sitting or lying down, and are especially noticeable when trying to fall asleep. In fact, restless leg syndrome is medically classified as a neurological sleep disorder. A variation, myoclonic jerks, causes involuntary leg movements that disrupt sleep. Type A personality are especially susceptible. Stress and hereditary are contributing factors. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatments help to significantly reduce the jerking of the legs and to improve quality of sleep. |
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an auto-immune disease marked by inflammatory changes in joints. It affects daily living, especially when the inflammation and stiffness prevents many normal activities. Mornings are especially difficult, since the loosening of the stiffness may take a few hours. When the inflammation is subsided, active exercise is used to maintain muscle strength and range of motion. Happily, acupuncture is very successful in treating pain, inflammation and stiffness. Usual course of treatment is about 1 month with 3 visits per week. Once or twice a week acupuncture visit thereafter helps to ensure minimal discomfort. It is recommended that you keep your doctor informed of treatments and update your doctor of the progress. This practice does not make any claims to cure any disease. |
SPRAIN A stretching or tearing of ligaments, the fibrous bands that bind bones together at a joint, is referred to as a sprain. Typically, the surrounding blood vessels are also injured, resulting in bruising. Although ligaments are very strong, almost any fall or misstep that twists a joint into an unnatural position can result in a sprain; in fact, a sprained ankle is the most common of all sports injuries. The knees are also vulnerable to severe sprains. For acute and chronic sprains, acupuncture is known to reduce significant amount of pain and inflammation after the second visit. A few more treatments help to recover at least twice as fast and to resolve the condition. |
