INTRODUCTION

The Malta Historical Society was founded in 1950 and began to publish its annual magazine Melita Historica in 1952. The aims of the Society were published as article two in the statute for the Society which was included in the 1963 edition of the Melita Historica:

The aim of the Society shall be the study of the History of the Maltese Islands, and the diffusion of its knowledge.

The study of Maltese History shall be promoted mainly by:

  1. the indexing of local archives;
  2. the cataloguing of documents in foreign archives connected with Maltese History;
  3. the collection and the publication of inscriptions and of documents, ecclesiastical and civil, bearing on the History of Malta;
  4. the cataloguing of manuscripts on the History of Malta
  5. the compilation of an up-to-date bibliography of all publications of local historical interest.

The Society shall undertake the publication of research work on Maltese History

The Society shall hold lectures and study circles on Historical Methodology and on the aims of local history.
