Family lore said that they came from Pennsylvania but they seem to have come to Georgia
by way of from Ohio. It is also suspected that the Mygrant family descended from a
Hessian soldier. It is also said that they had a sawmill in Worth County.
Most of the Mygrant family men seem to be engaged in farming.

Information on Eugene's siblings was taken from Jessie Ida Mygrant Shirah by her
 grandaughter Helen Shirah.

Mrs. Shirah, a native of Macon County had lived in Houston County for 25 years.
She was a retired textile mill employee, a member of Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include: 2 daughters, Mrs. S. W. Howard of Elko, Mrs. Ira Thigpen of
Dublin, one son, Thomas P. Shirah of Perry, one brother, Homer Mygrant of

Dozier Cem. beside her husband, Milton T. Shirah [10-14-1885 - 7-26-1955] See
his obit.

Note from Helen Shirah, granddaughter: I do not remember Ida as being the nice
grand motherly type of person. She was rather self-centered to me as a child and
this was the same sort of description that my mother gave. I never remember her
giving the grandchildren anything for Christmas, birthdays, etc. I do remember
visiting the house on Chapel Hill when Aunt Edna was still alive. It had a central
room as you came in the door that served as a living/dining room. On the right
hand side was a kitchen, very small and I think that the bathroom was located on
this side too. On the left hand side was the bedroom or bedrooms, I can't remember
if there was more than one or not. I seem to remember a bed being set up in the
living area when Aunt Edna was so sick prior to her death.

He donated the land to build the little church next door to their house.
His name does not appear among the charter members for this church.
Their house was a small, low wooden building with the outside covered
in faux brick, sheet type siding. Most of the other houses located
on Chapel Hill were set high off the ground with a large front porch.
They were all pretty much built the same way so may have been houses
build for the mill workers.

Note by Helen Shirah, granddaughter: I remember very little about
Milton Thomas Shirah. He died a month after his son, Jessie Eugene
who was my father. Mother seemed to have liked him and thought that
he was rather overshadowed by an overbearing wife. She told a story
about when Daddy was sharecropping with Grandpa Shirah at the time
Leroy was born. She could not nurse him so they had to get canned
milk and buy bottles. It really was a difficult time financially
so Daddy asked Grandpa if he could get an advance from the landowner
to help pay for this extra expense until crop time. He said that he
couldn't but later it came out that Grandma wanted some extra so that
was the advance that was gotten. I don't think that Bessie ever
forgave her for that.

(All of the obits. are worded the same. She was not a life-long resident of Houston County
having lived in Macon, Bibb, Houston Counties as well as Sandersville and Tennell to my knowledge.
And the only nurse's aide that I know that she did was sitting with older folks. Do not know who
gave the information for this obit. HSH)

Many marriages, possibly as many as 6. She was widowed by George Lawrence. At the time of her
death she was married to Earnest Chamblee.

More About CHRISTINE SHIRAH:
Burial: February 06, 1992, Woodlawn Cemetery, Perry, Houston County, Georgia.
Cause of Death: Ovarian Cancer, Pulminary
Funeral: Was held at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home, Perry, GA. The weather was extremely bad
(storming with heavy rain) and instead of everyone going to the cemetery, they just held what
was normally "grave-side" services at the chapel of the funeral home.
I remember visiting Tina and George at one time when they lived out from town in a building
that had once been a gas station but had been made into a residence. Think that this was in
either Tennille or Sandersville. HSH
