Notes for BESSIE KATE LEVERETT:
Note from Helen Shirah d/o of Bessie: Mother grew up during the depression. She was very
skinny and she said that she was always ashamed of the way her bones stuck out. Until her
death her Grandmother, Mary Thomas Hammock Leverett, lived with the family. Mary Tom was
blind in her later years.

When Bessie was widowed, she did not know how to handle a checkbook or drive a car. Laura
Mae Watson, wife of Gardner Watson the funeral director taught her to do the checkbook. She
drove a little before Eugene's vehicle was sold but since it was held together with "bailing
wire, chewing gun and crossed fingers" she could not afford to keep it. She never had another
vehicle until she and Charlie Lamberth married. Helen was 16 when they married so she was the
official driver for Bessie when Charlie was working. When Helen started to make plans to get
married, she took Bessie out to some county roads that had light traffic so that she could
practice driving. Bessie got her regular driver's license after Helen married.
Bessie's obituary contains numerous errors. She was certainly not a life long resident of
Houston County since she had lived in Macon County and Pitts (Wilcox County) during the time
that she was married to Eugene. They were living in Macon County and she worked at the shirt
factory for a period of time during WW11. Eugene, due to an accident had lost one of his eyes
and was having some other health problems. They moved to Montezuma until his health improved.
By the time Helen was born, they were living on the Lewis Tabor/Russo farm on Highway 41 North.
They were living there when Eugene died. After his death, Bessie and Helen moved to a duplex
apartment in Perry. Leroy was already in the Army when Eugene died.

Ridge Drive, died Wednesday in a Macon hospital. Born in Centerville, she had lived in Perry
