Murrell

From on Fri, 25 Apr 2008

Hi Elizabeth,
I stumbled across your website after entering James & Grace Murrell's name in google and was wondering if you would be agreeable to an exchange of information.
I believe that Grace Murrell nee Richards to be the first child of my g g grandfather Thomas Richards who leased / owned the property 'Opossum Point' near Tooma Nsw from c 1840 until his death in October 1850.
The couple were married "By Banns with the consent of the Governor" on 25th April 1848. James had secured his TOL passport on the 18th October 1847 on the recommendation of Commissioner Bingham.
NSW records have -
The death of James Murrell in 1870 #2381 at Albury, son of Mary and James, but gives no age.
Also the death of Grace Murrell 1870 #2380, died at Tumbarumba, dau of Thomas R, registered in Albury.
According to Grace's death certificate she died of "a tumour of the neck", a condition that had been ongoing for at least two years, I haven't as yet obtained the death certificate for James.

Regards
Arnie Fletcher, Albury Nsw

Thanks to Arnie's clues, I found Violence and Crime in Nineteenth century England, The Shadow of our Refinement, by John Carter Wood, Published in 2004.
The Chapter is titled 'Vigorous passions and decided actions', and half way down page 54, the author writes:- Work was another area of retributive customary violence, with labour disputes often taking the form of riots against an employer.
However such wrath was also directed against workers who cooperated with employers or who were in other ways seen as undermining the unity of the trade.
During an agricultural dispute in Norfolk in 1835, a group of men attacked two labourers who had taken employment with a farmer whose men had stopped work due to a dispute (30 - ASSA 36/2 Norfolk Summer 1835, R v Marsham, et al) John Hunter, a farmer, deposed,
'On Saturday the 27th day of June last he was requested by Thomas Hebgin of Great Bircham, farmer, to furnish him with some labourers as his own men had struck work for the week ... On the following Monday ... he went to Bircham with two men by the names of Collinson and Simmonds who had mounted two of Mr Hegbin's horses to go to work, and were proceeding to the field to plough [when] they were attacked by several persons, to the number of 20 at least, and violently and forcibly pulled off their horses.'
Although the mob also attacked Hunter and attempted to pull him off his horse, while threatening to murder him, he was able to ride away with Hegbin, who testified to the same events (31, introducing these notes.)
Page 161, 31 - Thomas Marsham, James Murrell and George Sadler were convicted and had the sentence of death recorded against them ASSA 33/12 Norfolk Summer 1835. This is a footnote for a paragraph on Page 54 outlining the dispute that led to the court case.

See James Murrell a web page where the author includes "our James" in her search for 'her James Murrell', giving us an unexpected treasure. Scroll down to her notes beginning
