on 4 May 2008 has sent a copy of the death certificate of 14 month old George Benjamin Pilley who died by Asphyxia and was buried at Sea in a Protestant service led by Captain John Mckerlie, shows he died at 40"22'S and 13"20'W on 30 August 1857
The Blackwall had sailed from London on 9 July and arrived at Hobson Bay (Melbourne) on 16 October
Days at sea - 22 + 31 + 30 + 16 = 99, and the child died and was buried on Day 51 of being at Sea.
40"22'S and 13"20'W shows Captain John McKerlie was just south and east of the volcanic island Tristan da Cunha, named after the Portugese sailor who sighted them in 1506 - the main island ( 37°6' S, 12°16' W) (area: 98 km˛, 38 sq mi) in those days occupied by a British military garrison, with civilian whalers, and a stopping port for journeys from Europe before the Suez Canal was opened in 1869.
This is in the South Atlantic Ocean, west of Africa, on the same latitude as Bass Strait, the water between Victoria and Tasmania, and on the traditional 'Roaring Forties' route, the Clipper Route followed by ships sailing between England and Australia/New Zealand.

Hi, I descend from William Pilley's son John Wesley - his daughter Mary May Pilley born 1881 was my paternal grandmother.
I was interested to see that you have evidence of William coming to Australia with his family in 1857. This is completely new to me as the 1861 census shows him back in London. I also had no idea about William Pilley's son William dying and there being a George Benjamin Pilley born in 1856 and a second William Pilley born in 1857. The next child I have after Harriet is Alice born 1859 in Cheltenham.
I'd be really interested to hear more about the Australian connection although I did know about William's brothers Josiah and George coming to Australia. I have plenty of info on the family in England if you have any gaps and also a good contact for Josiah Pilley who returned to England (he descends from George Dembinski).
Many thanks and I hope to hear from you, John Turner

Hi Elizabeth, Yes Albert did leave Victoria, he went to NSW actually he went to Goulburn NSW I know he was a chemist & owned A shop in Goulburn then in Sydney. He died in Sydney in 1924. He married in Goulburn in 1892 to Isobel Hedridge. They had 2 children Maie Louisa Pilley & Hugh Alexander Pilley.
Hugh is my pop, he is my father's father.
I am noticing u think George's parents are John & Hannah I used to think this, until another Pilley researcher from Wales informed me the mother's name is Harriet not Hannah. Harriet Hinton is her name & gels with why the Pilley boys have Hinton in their name. I can tell u more if u like. I am finding Victorian sites aren't very helpful eg: pay for bdm, nsw is free. This is why I haven't a lot because vic is harder.
I have more info about England than Vic. Write back.
