The Syrian Suicide Squad was first formed in early 1988
and has been rebuilt at least three times since. At our height we had 20
badge carrying members, and a call out list of 40. This dwindled to 3 regular
players between 95-96 and has slowly risen back to around 5-7 steady members
and a call out of about 10. Only one original member still plays with the
Syrians, Neil Harris, who is currently serving in the position of Captain.
The Syrians were founded on the principle of social play
above all else. The only entry requirement we have ever imposed is an impeccable
reputation for honesty and the ability to absorb large quantities of intoxicants.
These requirements have in the past kept us barred from the tournament
scene (er, hard to play top level paintball hungover, yes that's it :)
and left us playing squarely in the amateur environment. We have managed
to avoid the title of newbie bashers by being "Friendly and affable"
(Quoted from a member of Kamo-Kazi on PaintNet, a quote some members are
still try to live down :) and by being willing to mix up teams, share equipment,
experience, and beer with any group we play with.
Taking part in the 2nd Division of the NZNPL has improved our playing quite dramatically. We can only
hope that as we start to take competitive paintball a little more seriously, we don't damage
our reputation as "A drinking club with a paintball problem". :)
