The story of how Goldfinger's John Feldmann helped Mest land their Maverick Records deal is ancient history. By now, so are the descriptions of the band's sound-one spin of their new, self-titled fourth album, and it's obvious these reggae-loving punk-pop tunesmiths have more than a fanbase in common with Good Charlotte. And, since the rumors that Mest singer/guitarist Tony Lovato secretly lusts after GC's Benji Madden (long story, old inside joke) has already been beaten to death on message boards, we figures we'd go a different route to find the dirt on thsi Chicago foursome. So, bassist Matt Lovato, what bits of your world can you share with us that might actually suprise fans?
"Stuff about things we do, I guess."
Hmm. Okay, so what are you doing right now?
"I'm sitting here with slippers on, in my underwear, watching MTV," he says.
And how's that working for you?
"It's good. It's real relaxing. Normally, I'd be sitting in an RV, driving on the highway -- somewhere though Idaho, probably," he reports.
Ah, the road. Sounds sexy, right? Right -- unless, of course, you're stuck in a tour bus with seven other guys, driving through a heat wave when the air conditioning breaks. Matt remembers: "One time, with the engine heat coming though the bus, everyone was in just underwear," he says with a laugh. "Even out tour manager -- we didn't know him too well yet, and he wasn't anything sexy with his clothes on -- was sitting in his underwear pouring sweat."
