"I was just wondering when Storm Thurmond was gonna die..."
7/25/01 -- Atlanta

Those words actually came from the head of the US Civil Rights Commission, Dr. Mary Frances Berry, during a speech at the NAACP Convention a couple of weeks ago.

Of course, had the words been spoken by a white political offical about a black legislator, the outcry and uproar would resound from sea to deep-blue-shining sea. We would have demands for boycotts, firings, sit-ins, and all sorts of other denouncements from pulpits and newspapers and street corners and newscasts across the nation. People from Jesse Jackson to Hollywood actors to Joe the barber would have to weigh in with their say on the statement.

But this has registered but a blip on the national radar. Why? Because Berry is a liberal Democrat, speaking to one of the largest liberal organizations in the nation. The response to Berry's comments from her audience in New Orleans was laughter and applause.

And they like to say that we conservatives hate people? That's pretty sad if you ask me.
