Run for the border!

The NAACP, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to create "border patrols" at the Welcome Centers on South Carolina's Interstates. These patrols are supposed to discourage people from spending their money in South Carolina until the state removes the Confederate flag from the state house grounds.

Waitaminit - didn't we go through something like this last year? Wasn't there a compromise that removed the flag from the top of the state house in Columbia? Didn't that compromise move the Confederate flag to a historical exhibit elsewhere on the state house grounds? In order, yes, yes and yes. The NAACP says that isn't good enough. They insist that the flag has no place on public property in South Carolina, period.

Reparations for Slavery: TANSTAAFL

For a science fiction and mystery fan like me, the acronym TANSTAAFL means a lot. It is commonly used to refer to the notion that if something a character in the story does is too easy, it either is too good to be true, or it has much larger and more harsh consequences down the road.

Perhaps someone should tell Black America about TANSTAAFL: "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch." Many black Americans feel that the government "owes" them something in the form of reparations for the years that Slavery as an institution was legal and encouraged in the United States and the British Crown Colonies.
