Approximately thirty miles south of Las Vegas, stands Hoover Dam, along Hoover DamColorado River on the Nevada-Arizona border. The dam stands 726 feet high, the equivalent of a fifty story building, and is considered to be an engineering wonder. The sturdy base measures 650 feet thick. The dam began construction in 1931 and was completed in 1935, two years ahead of schedule. Surprisingly, it required only 5,000 workers to construct this enormous undertaking. The dam has stopped the natural flow of the Colorado river and formed Lake Mead, stretching over 115 miles through Nevada, and creating a reservoir of 255 square miles, roughly enough water to cover the state of New York.

The Automobile Museum is located within the Imperial Palace Hotel/Casino in Imperial Palace Automobile Museumthe central area of the Strip. Over two hundred classic, antique and special-interest cars, trucks and motorcycles are housed here on the upper level of the hotel's parking garage. Included in the collection is a 1939 Mercedes touring sedan once owned by Adolf Hitler. The museum also has the world's largest collection of Duesenberg automobiles, comprised of over twenty-five cars from between 1925 and 1937.

The central region of the Strip, is in some ways the historical location. The The FlamingoFlamingo Hilton, was the first of the true luxury Vegas hotels to appear in 1946. It was developed by Bugsy Seigel, who was reputed to have connections with the mafia. His relationships with people in the film industry, brought high profile names to the city, which further attracted visitors. Much of the original hotel has been renovated, and is now under the ownership of the Hilton Corporation. Caesars Palace is located directly across from the Flamingo. For over twenty five years, this hotel Caesars Palacestood as the pinnacle of splendor and opulence, set among Grecian surroundings. A special attraction is the Forum Shops, styled as if actually set among an outside street. The domed ceiling is painted to resemble the sky, and throughout the day, a storm brews across it, announcing the arrival of Brutus. Fountains and statues suddenly spring to life, moving and speaking as a light show projects overhead. During the 90's a new breed of luxury came Treasure Islandto Vegas, with the arrival of Treasure Island. This hotel not only welcomed adults, but developed a place for families to come and enjoy together. A lagoon , referred to as Buccaneer Bay, was built along the outside of the hotel facing Las Vegas Boulevard, and full sized replicas of a British frigate and pirate ship were dropped into the water. Throughout the day and evening, a battle ensues between the two ships, as canons blast, fire flares up from the decks, men fall to their "death" in the chilly waters, and eventually one of the ships is sunk.
