704. Secretary Richard WALDRON [image] 1 was born on 21 Feb 1694 in Dover, Straf., Nh. He died on 23 Aug 1753 in Portsmouth, Rock., Nh. He married 2 Elizabeth WESTBROOK on 31 Dec 1718 in Dover, Straf., Nh. [Parents]

Richard Waldron "was graduated from Harvard College in 1712. ... He was a member of the Royal Council for New Hampshire in 1728; secretary of the Province for a long period, including the administration of Governor Belcher; judge of the Probate from 1737 to 1742, and the representative in the General Assembly in 1749, of which body he was unanimously chosen speaker." (From Cutts Genealogy, p. 515).

"... a major opponent of the Wentworth oligarchy until his death in 1753," reads a caption to his portrait printed in Jere Daniell, Colonial New Hampshire - A History (1982), (p. 203). Chapter 9 of that book discusses the ascendency of the Governors' Wentworth and Richard Waldron's leadership in attempts to curb their power). By contrast, his son was considered a "friend" of the last of the three Governors' Wentworth. (Brian C. Cuthbertson, The Loyalist Governor - Biography of Sir John Wentworth (1983), p. 20).

Four pages of biographical information are at Waldron, Richard, III, by David E. Van Deventer (scroll down to Notes in a Gencircles webpage), this was in turn taken from a University of Oklahoma history course website whose content has been removed but may reappear in a future semester.

An analysis of his political partnership with Governor Belcher (Belcher's late sister had been Richard's aunt) is given in Jonathan Belcher, Colonial Governor, by Michael C. Batinski, pp.108-9 which contrasts somewhat with Deventers view, and as a footnote in History of New Hampshire, Belknap, p.227.

Original portrait was by Greenwood and now (2004) hangs in the Langdon House in Portsmouth with those of his wife and son Thomas Westbrook Waldron. A copy previously hung in the "Council Chamber" of the Wentworth-Coolidge house (See Brewster's Rambles about Portsmouth #17 at seacoastnh.com). It appears in this website with permission of SPNEA or Historic New England.

Birth, marr., and death dates from Cutts Gen, p. 21. Death date followed by Daniell, Colonial New Hampshire.

Marr place from IGI N.H. for 1935 marr record. Source (within IGI): A184633 /9883.

705. Elizabeth WESTBROOK [image] 1 was born on 6 Nov 1701 in Of Portsmouth, Rock., Nh. She died 2, 3 on 16 Oct 1758 in Portsmouth, Rock., Nh. [Parents]

Her portrait now hangs with that of her husband and son Thomas Westbrook Waldron in the Governor John Langdon house, house and portraits owned by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. (January 2004 E mails from J Flaherty, curator at the SPNEA). Shown in this website with permission.

This portrait is described as item 121 in Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society (1937),

(A portrait of the artist John Greenwood and his family is found at progressive historians.com (scroll down or search for "Greenwood"). Note that the arms and hands are painted in the same stylistic way as for Elizabeth Westbrook).

Marr and death dates from Cutts Gen. p. 34.

Vaughan Family, p.7 gives November 26, 1701 as her date of birth.

736. John LORING 1 was born on 22 Dec 1630 in Axminster, Devon, England. He was christened on 27 Dec 1630 in Axminster, Devon, England. He died 2 on 19 Sep 1714 in Massachussetts. He married 3 Mary BAKER on 16 Dec 1657 in Hingham, Plymouth, Ma. [Parents]

"...born at Axminster, England, as his son, Rev. Israel Loring tells us, December 22, 1630, baptized December 27 1630; ... He married second, September 22, 1679, Mrs. Rachel Buckland, widow of Mr. Benjamin Buckland of Rehoboth, and daughter of Mr. John Wheatly, of Braintree; she died September 20, 1713, aged seventy years.

"He resided in Hull; was town clerk seventeen years, one of the selectmen nine terms, representative in 1692. His son Israel became a minister and wrote a very affectionate and particular obituary upon his father, which is preserved in the archives of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and in the copy of that document in Mr. James Spear Loring's manuscript volume in the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Several items of interest are worth quoting:

" ' Mr. John Loring while a boy of five years definitely determined to be a good child of his heavenly Father and was earnestly religious throughout his life. His wife attributed her own conversion to his influence. He was very solicitous to secure the conversion of his children. He began with them when they were young, tender and flexible, to put them in mind of God their Creator, and the things that belong to everlasting peace... He was a great reader ... His was a religious family; the morning and evening sacrifice were duly offered up and on the Lord's Day evenings the sermons, which at meeting he took down in characters, were repeated.' He cut his foot at one time, and the wound developed into a malignant sore, which gave him extreme pain. After a famous physician of Boston had treated the foot and failed to cure it or relieve the agony, a friend of Mrs. Loring, 'Mrs. Whitmore of Medford, a doctress,' came to visit the family and 'applying her balsom to his angry wounds he presently had rest and ease and slept soundly the night following; and, with the blessing of heaven upon her endeavours, she effected a cure.' He recovered his health, and lived some time thereafter.

"He died on Lord's Day morning, September 19, 1714." (Loring Genealogy, pp. 13-4).

"A true Inventory of all and Singular the Goods Chattles and Credits of John Loring Gent deceased, prized at Hull on the 19th day of October in the year 1714 by Robert Melton and Joseph Benson as follows
-- Imp., his Apparel £10 Item his Books £2 =£12
It pewter and brass £10,8. It working tools and Iron £10-13 =£12-1
It Bedding furniture & linnen £37. Item Lumber is 3/s4 40-4
It his stock £44 Item One Negro Man £40 84
Item housing and Lands 814
£971-5" (Loring Gen, p.19).

"[A] sizeable estate," one historian said of a similarly-sized inventory probated in 1722, "but unimpressive by European standards." Up to this time it was rare for British North American estates to reach £2000, and then only in the slave states to the south. (Gary B. Nash, Red, White, and Black - The Peoples of Early America, (2nd ed, 1982), p. 214). From this we can presume that John Loring, at least in a British North American context, died a well-to-do individual.
