1472. Thomas LORING 1 died 2 on 4 Apr 1661 in Hull, Massachusetts. He married Jane NEWTON in England.

"Thomas Lorin was one of the church wardens who signed the register-transcript for the year 1629-1630. (Evidence of his full accord with the [Anglican] church at that time)." (Loring Genealogy, p. xvi).

Part of Loring Genealogy can be found at Loring Genealogy

Deacon Thomas Loring was "one of the wardens of the parish" in Axminster, England, before coming to live on the east coast of North America on December 23, 1634, with his wife and two oldest sons. He joined the church colony of Hingham, Massachusetts, effectively changing his religion from the Church of England to the Congregational or Puritan church. He was "admitted 'freeman' or citizen of the colony March 3, 1635-6." He was already living on a lot at Town and Ship streets by this time.

In 1637 he and others obtained the town's permission to set up a weir or net to catch fish at what became known as the "weir river", a stream that flowed nearby. He did this at least in part because he was a farmer in need of fish to fertilize his land. In March 1637 he received a license from the General Court to be an Innkeeper. He was also a Deacon in the Congregational or Puritan church.

When his house in Hingham burned down on March 15, 1645-6, he moved to Hull and bought property there. He "took a prominent place there" and was constable "which then meant court officer, tax collector, etc., and demanded a good business education as well as efficiency."

He bought land in another plantation called Seakonk or Rehoboth, but did not move there or keep his land. On May 30 1660 he did buy " 'for a valuable consideration' " a large amount of land that included about four acres, and four lots, some meadowland, all within the town of Hull, Massachusetts.

He died without leaving a will, but the inventory of his estate takes about three pages in the Loring Genealogy, and includes "the land called Himpland hill" (£38/10/0), "the boate" (£14), "two small lots at hogg Island" (£1/10/0), other lands, and a detailed description of the bedding, clothing, and farm implements he owned. "The whole summe Amounts to [£]331/15/00." This was not as prosperous as his son John's inventory some fifty years later, but still appears to have been a respectablely sized estate. (Loring Genealogy, pp. 1-7).

"THOMAS, Hingham, freem. 3 Mar. 1636, came from Axminster; Co. Devon, says the fam. tradit. with w. wh; was Jane Newton, and ch. Thomas, and John, the latter b. 22 Dec. 1630, and they left their home 22 Dec. 1634, stopped first at Dorchester, but it could not be long, for his house lot was drawn at H. 18 Sept. aft. emb., had bapt. there Isaac, on 22 Jan. 1640, d. next mo. by scald.; Josiah, 9 Jan. 1642; Joshua, 1643, d. soon; and Benjamin, 17 Nov. 1644; was early a deac. rem. to Hull, d. 1 Apr. 1661; and his wid. d. 25 Aug. 1672." (Savages)

Some sources on the internet give his father as an Anthony Loring, but we haven't seen the sources, and wonder at the long gaps between some of the suggested dates.

1473. Jane NEWTON 1 died 2 on 25 Aug 1672 in Hull, Plymouth, Ma.

" ' [S]he was a woman of a lively spirit, ... skilled in the practise of physick' " (Loring Gen, p. 1). Her will appears on pp. 7-8 of the Loring Genealogy, and includes many bequests such as the book "the jewel of contentment", and clothing to family members.

We entered "jewel of contentment" into google.ca and it appears to be a religious book.

The Loring Genealogy advised that it was unknown where she was born or who her parents were, regardless of sites which give father as Richard Newton
