The theft
It was early morning on the Day of Freedom, 18th the Month of the
Dragon. The Adventurers had just begun to stir from their tents in
the Sendarian Countryside.
Today they were going into Sendar to purchase supplies for a track
to Camaar. Mortiris, Zorica, Collenia, and Gares quickly packed up
their tents and supplies, and, being accustomed to travel, they were
fairly proficient at packing and unpacking. All in all, it took about
ten minutes to get on their way. They ate a breakfast of bread and
dried meat while riding their horses towards the Northern Sendar Gates.
The five-hour ride was fairly boring, not much more than a few deer
and rabbits to look at and no one really felt like talking. The Adventurers
were busy thinking of ways to gain more members as they came upon
the Sendar Gates.
'Halt!' a sendarian guard bellowed as the group came to a steady stop.
The guard eyed the group for a short time before finally saying 'Take
caution today travellers, the streets of Sendar are not as safe as
they should be.' Perplexed by the statement Collenia asked,
'Why do you say that good sir? Surely the Sendarian Army keeps its
capitol protected.' With a blush of the face the guard replied,
'There have been a few mysterious events as of late, why just this
morning the Lady Emily found that she was missing a valuable collections
of gold, silver, and bronze eggs.'
'Mighty Belar, who would do such a thing' Zorica exclaimed as he began
to work himself up into a berserker rage. Mortiris quickly put a hand
on his arm.
'Not yet my friend, let's save that fighting spirit for a fight shall
we?' After talking with the guard for a few minutes, the Adventurers
decided they knew where the next Adventure was, they quickly found
their way to Lady Emily's abode.
Gares knocked on the door, and a few second later a beautiful woman
answered,
'Yes? Who might you be?'
'We are a group of people seeking Adventure,' Gares said, 'We heard
of your unfortunate loss and came to see if we might assist you in
located the eggs.' Emily looked the group over.
'I suppose more help is always useful,' she finally said as she beckoned
for them to enter her home. She showed the group to a sitting room
where she produced some tea and crackers as she explained the morning’s
events in detail. 'I have reason to believe the eggs haven't left
Sendar yet. I have the guards assisting in the search but perhaps
you can do better.' Emily laid out the morning’s events as they
unfolded, giving every little detail. The group took the information
and began plotting how to search the capitol of Sendaria for the lost
eggs, each member was capable of protecting themselves so it was decided
they'd all split up and meet in River's Bend Tavern towards evening.
Gares
Waving in farewell to the others Gares quickly hitched
his pack and headed to the southern part of Sendar. Eager for the
adventure, Gares quickly combed through the alleys before heading
to the park, making sure to leave not a single stone unturned in
his search.
After several hours of searching, he had found nothing, and the
heat was beginning to take its toll on him. He drank some water
from his bottle while surveying the area, his warrior sense telling
him he was missing something. He stood in the middle of the park
deep in thought, his eyes falling upon the lake as blankly before
quickly snapping into focus.
Something told him he had found where he should be looking. He raised
his eyes momentarily to look at a duck family that was swimming
across the surface and grinned. The day was definitely getting better.
Taking off his boots, he quickly dove into the water and swam deep
into it, following the gleam deep in the water.
Finally, after about a minute of swimming, he found what he was
looking for: resting against the bottom of the lake were two golden
and two silver eggs in what appeared to be a basket. The thieves
no doubt dumped them in here and were hoping to collect them later,
when the coast was clear and Lady Emily had called off the search.
Grabbing them hastily, he planted both feet on the ground and quickly
kicked off, rushing rapidly to the surface. He knew that Lady Emily
would be very pleased with his findings as he put on his boots and
headed to River's Bend Tavern to meet the others.
Zorica
Being a Cherek, Zorica decided to go to the Cherek
Sea, since he understood the place better. So with an eager heart,
Zorica set out on a small boat, travelling towards Cherek Bore.
However, despite frantic searching, Zorica's effort bore no fruits.
Though feeling disappointed, Zorica pressed on, because he knewas
an Adventurer, his duties is to help others who were in need of
help. Then came his lucky star.
It was Barak, atop his ship, the Sea Bird. Without hesitation, Zorica
asked his ex-captain for assistance. Barak readily agreed. Barak
was a master navigator and, in a short time, he uncovered eight
Bronze eggs while cruising his ship along the Sea of the Winds.
The ship moved fast so Zorica was able to travel as far as to the
northern isle in Riva down to the Southern river in Jungle of Nyissa.
When the sky turned dark, Zorica decided it was time to go back
and meet up. Zorica thanked Barak and bade goodbye. With a satisfied
smile, Zorica returned back to River's Bend Tavern in Sendar to
meet up with the rest.
Collenia
After giving Lady Emily an encouraging smile, the
young priestess Collenia turned to the rest of the Adventurers and
said,
'I'll go and try searching the northern part of the city, and visit
with the elders in the temple as well. They might have heard of
something.' Upon leaving the house, she saw a boy she recognized
as one of the children of the families she used to visit in a nearby
village.
'Ranier!' she called out, smiling happily. The boy
ran to her and slid to a stop, sending the dust flying about their
feet.
'Collie! We haven't seen you in a while,' the boy beamed, giving
her a wide smile. Coughing to hide her laugh at the nickname Ranier
had given her,
'Erm..yes, well where are you running off to this time? Not getting
yourself into trouble are you?'
The boy blinked and looked at her, looking slightly hurt. 'Of course
not... in fact I'm actually helping someone right now. You can follow
me if you want… I'm on my way to the temple.' Nodding, she
walked with the boy, catching up on how his family has been, what
his recent adventures and misadventures have been. Thoroughly enjoying
the conversation, they finally found themselves in front of the
temple, which she had called her home since her childhood. As she
started to climb the steps leading into the building, Ranier's dust
covered hand reached out and tugged on her sleeve.
'Yes?' she asked, turning to him. He simply shook his head and pointed
to the path leading to the back of the temple.
Collenia followed him and saw him walking towards the small barn.
As soon as she opened her mouth to ask what in the world they were
going to see in the old barn, her eyes widened at the sight. Upon
entering the chicken coop, amongst the confusion of hens and chicks
walking and clucking, Collenia saw a nest filled with a few odd-looking
eggs. Lady Emily's treasured eggs!
'I've seen eggs scattered around, and I thought I'd return them
to the hens so they would hatch!' Ranier said proudly, reaching
in his small pouch and retrieving a gold egg and resting it carefully
inside one of the nests. Explaining to the small boy who the eggs
belonged to, the boy frowned slightly confused, 'Well... if you
say they're Lady Emily's then they are... But how...'
Chuckling softly, she gently retrieves the eggs from the nest disturbing
the hen making it cluck at her reprovingly but settled in the next
nest quietly. As they make their way to the River's Bend Tavern,
she explained to Ranier the incident and as she got bombarded by
questions of his own, she made a mental note to ask him how he found
the eggs once he finally stops talking... Well, IF he stops talking.
Mortiris
As Mortiris left Lady Emily's abode he quickly devised a simple plan
to track down as many eggs as possible. First task was to visit the
local shops and taverns, if any information could be dug up on Emily's
eggs it would be found in one of the two. It was on clan road that
Mortiris got his first lead, outside the local pub he found his first
egg, a silver one.
Going in the pub to learn if anyone had more information on the lost
eggs Mortiris ran into a cloaked figure, muttering their apologies
the figure quickly left down the road. Watching the figure for a split
second Mortiris thought nothing of it, he continued into the pub.
The pub was quite inactive this afternoon, a few patrons sat at tables
near a fireplace but other than that it was just the barkeep. Mortiris
questioned the patrons and found no hint of the eggs, but upon questioning
the barkeep he learned that the figure he bumped into paid for their
drinks with a bronze egg. Paying for the prized egg Mortiris hurriedly
ran from the pub looking for the cloaked figure.
After a few hours of fruitless searching Mortiris was ready to give
up and return to the River's Bend with only a bronze and silver egg,
hardly what he thought he could find, when, by freak accident, he
tripped into a cloaked figure.
Caught by surprise, the figure quickly went for their dagger and attempted
to stab the just as surprised Mortiris. Mortiris used his sceptre
to deflect the dagger as he struck back with his staff. After a skirmish
that lasted several minutes and fetched the eye of a few onlookers,
Mortiris finally managed to land a good blow to the cloaked figure's
head. Going down in a heap of fabric, the assailant was out cold.
Dragging his rival into the nearest building, Grebe's Tavern, Mortiris
quickly bound the sedated body with his belt and decided it was time
to uncloak the shadowed figure. Shock swept over him as he found a
pretty young woman under the dark cloaks that hid her form. Grebe
and the other clients looked at Mortiris suspiciously... Under the
hard stare of all the tavern eyes Mortiris felt a little nervous,
not many people would likely believe that this pretty woman had tried
to attack him, he quickly asked for some water to help revive the
young woman. Grebe had one of his waitresses see to the water and
Mortiris soon brought the woman attacker back to consciousness.
After an hour long discussion in which the woman eventually confessed
to stealing Lady Emily's eggs Mortiris had decided it was time to
let the young woman go. He took the remaining eggs she had, a few
more bronzes and a couple of silver ones, and decided it was time
to go back to River's Bend.
Emily's reward
As the setting sun painted the dusty road an array
of oranges and yellows Mortiris slipped into River's Bend Tavern.
Once inside he noticed that the other three Adventurers were already
waiting for him. Zorica, Gares and Collenia were seated in a table
located near the wall quietly discussing something when Mortiris
pulled up a chair.
'So look who finally decided to show up,' Collenia smirked as she
welcomed Mortiris. Gares and Zorica gave slight chuckles. Mortiris
smiled at the sly comment and called Chere, the local River's Bend
waitress, to the table.
'I'd like something hard and with some zip to it,' Mortiris asked
as Chere scuttered off to acquire his drink.
Once all four of the Adventurers had settled into their drink of
choice they all began to share their stories. One by one they told
of how they found their eggs. After all the stories, and a few drinks,
it was time to get down to business. Compiling all the eggs into
one large sac they had three gold, six silver, and seventeen bronze
eggs, not a bad days work, by far not all of Emily's eggs but a
decent amount. It was time to take what they found to Lady Emily.
As they approached her place of residence they decided it was best
not to tell her about the young woman who committed the theft of
her eggs. Adventurers might be all about helping people in need
but they knew little about the young woman, perhaps she had a good
enough reason to steal the eggs, perhaps she had need herself. Besides,
the Sendarian Militia would probably catch the young woman, best
leave the police work to the rightful authorities.
Knocking on the door to Emily's home the Adventurers were quickly
let in. They sat, like last meeting, in the formal room drinking
tea. They each told Emily of their findings, leaving out Mortiris'
run in with the young thief, and presenting her with some of the
eggs she had lost. Overjoyed at the good news and excited to see
at least half of her valuable eggs were recovered she quickly hugged
each of the Adventurers.
'I must reward your deeds,' Emily stated as she hurried from the
room. Gares and Zorica exchanged grins as Mortiris and Collenia
attempted to play it cool.
Emily came back a few minutes later with a small chest in her arms.
Gares quickly jumped up to assist her with what looked like a somewhat
heavy burden for the Lady. 'This is for you' Emily said slightly
out of breath. Mortiris looked at the chest,
'Please Lady Emily, we cannot take this much, we did not expect
such a lavish gift,' Mortiris tried to protest as she forced the
chest and its contents upon them.
'Nonsense. I'll have none of this, you take what I give you and
stop trying to give it back,' Emily said curtly, stopping all argument.
The conversation carried on for a while as the
Adventurers and Emily each said their “thank you”s.
Finally seeing their way out the door, well after nightfall, the
Adventurers had quite a days worth of adventure, it was time to
retire for the night. With a chest full of gold and grins as wide
as watermelon slices they all decided they would stay in the local
inn tonight, soon they would begin their track to Camaar, to scout
for the prime location of their new clan hall. All was well with
the Adventurers, their numbers were growing and many promising young
Adventurers were quickly rising in the ranks... besides, there are
always new adventures on the horizon.
The thief
... As the young woman left Grebe's Tavern fifteen
minutes after Mortiris, she was confronted by a man veiled in shadows.
'You have failed this trial Avyndia, if you wish to be in the Guild
of Thieves you must not flaunt your steal. You were lucky this time,
a common farmer is much more forgiving than the Sendarian Militia
or the Tolnedran Legions. You have one more chance to prove yourself
worthy of our halls, failure to do so means a long long sleep. '
Avyndia shuddered as the shadow veiled man walked into an alley
and vanished. This is not over farmer, I will find you and exact
my revenge on your hide, Avyndia thought to herself as she began
plotting her next attempt at entering the Guild of Thieves.
