Role-play FAQ

QUESTIONS
ANSWERS

What is role-play?

Role-play is where you step into someone else's shoes and pretend you are that character, so you eat like him, walk like him, talk like him. In Prophecy the MUD, you will be role-playing a character, be it a Mimbrate knight or a Thull slave, within the world of the Belgariad and Mallorean, created by David and Leigh Eddings. So for example, a Cherek berserker would attack Angaraks and not Drasnians, and drink beer.

How do I role-play?

In Prophecy the MUD, there are currently three available modes of role-play: using the role-play channel, in-game RPand writing stories on the storyboard. Purists would regard in-game RP as the only form of role-play.

The role-play channel is a public channel in which one role-plays. This means any activity within the channel can be viewed by all players online who have the channel on. This, although strange to some MUDers, generally allows for more flexibility, for example a character is able to influence the weather, or role-play with imaginary characters. The channel is monitored by immortals, who are more likely to reward players for their role-play on the channel than for role-play within the MUD (which is not recorded). In-game RP involves using emote, pmote, say, the socials and certain commands (e.g. eat, drink). The character would also not do anything that would not suit his race, for example an Ulgo killing a Rivan mob/NPC without a purpose. This mode of role-play is favoured by MUDers from role-play MUDs, and also by the dedicated role-player.

Emote <string> - the character performs the action.
e.g.
Syntax: emote trots along the road, humming to himself.
Output: Bob trots along the road, humming to himself.

Pmote <string> - the character performs the action, but includes player names.
e.g.
Syntax: pmote sneaks up to Tom and steals Tom's purse.
Output to all: Bob sneaks up to Tom and steals Tom's purse.
Output to Tom: Bob sneaks up to you and steals your purse

Say <speech> - the character says the speech.
e.g.
Syntax: say Thief!
Output: Tom says 'Thief!'

Socials are special forms of pre-coded emotes, e.g. grin, smile, etc. To view the complete list of socials available, type "social" in MUD.

Finally, writing stories on the storyboard. This is the most common form of role-play on Prophecy, where players writes stories and post it on the storyboard for all, or specific people, to see. Read "help note" in MUD for more information.

How do I use the role-play channel?

As mentioned above, role-playing on the role-play channel is public. For an example of what such role-play looks like, click here.

Syntax: rp It's a sunny day
Output: [RP] Bob says 'It's a sunny day'
Equivalent: say

Syntax: rp /mutter But I've got a headache
Output: [RP] Bob mutters 'But I've got a headache'
Note: remember to use infinitive of the verb - the code automatically adds an 's' for you

Syntax: rp *squints at the sky.
Output: [RP] Bob squints at the sky.
Equivalent: emote

Syntax: rp -smile
Output: [RP] Bob smiles happily.
Equivalent: social

Syntax: rp narr Then it starts raining.
Output: [RP] (Player): Then it starts raining.

I don't know how to role-play my character. What should I do?

Quite simply, you put yourself into the character's shoes, and imagine how the character will react in a certain scenario. Often, the hardest part of role-playing is starting, and because of this, most RP newbies will begin role-playing in a tavern to familiarise themselves with the commands and their characters before moving on. Remember that a character's history and personality will affect their behaviour.

Are there limitations to role-play?

The limitations are kept to a minimum, but as the world is set in Eddings, deviating from the main theme would be frowned on. However, it is generally advised to stick to the following role-play etiquttes:

  • Do not take control of someone’s character without permission, e.g.
Rp *slaps Bobby, who bursts into tears.
Although you may have slapped Bobby, it is up to Bobby to decide whether he wants to cry or slap you back, so instead it should be:
Rp *slaps Bobby hard in the face.
This of course poses problems during fight scenes, but in those instances you can discuss this with the person you’re ‘fighting’.
  • Do not kill any player in role-play unless they asked you to, as the killing of a player in role-play is a way to say goodbye before the player deletes. It also ruins the players' fun. By ‘player’ we mean a character whose name can be found on who, or can be fingered. Mobiles and imaginary characters do not count.
  • Do not be Superman! You aren't omnipotent, omniscient or indestructable. One of the harder parts of role-play is giving your character flaws, but once you’ve got the hang of it everything becomes easier, not to mention flawed characters are more believable.
  • Do not list our what happens to your character. We want a story, not a string of unconnected events.
  • No shorthand or smilies, e.g. tbh, imo, :P, :)
