The Life of Atronius

Chapter 1: Boot Camp
Walking back and forth in front of the new recruits, the drill sergeant looked at the boys with a plainly seen look of disgust smeared across his face. His sharp eyes noticed that one of the recruits wasn’t standing at attention properly. In what appeared to be almost magic, the drill sergeant quickly stepped right up to the boy, his face barely 3 inches away.
'You know how to stand BOY!'
'Sssir.... I think..... I mean.... ' the boy stuttered as he shook in fear.
'I asked you a question BOY! Now what the hell did you just say? That made no sense whatsoever! You apparently don’t understand how things work around here. Now stand up straight. Pull back those shoulders and puff out your chest.' Stepping back, the drill sergeant looked at the rest of the recruits with an arrogant sneer splayed across his face.
'Listen up you stinking maggots! You really think you have what it takes to be a legionnaire? Why my grandmother would have a better chance at it and she’s almost 70 years old! Why do you people keep joining up year after year! Didn’t your older relatives, the ones that failed, tell you what this is all about!? Well it’s to late now! I’m going to make your life hell for the next six months! You’re going to beg me to kill you just to make the pain go away! But all I’m going to do is make you work harder.'
'You boys have no idea what it takes to be a legionnaire. You think that just because you think you know how to wield a sword you’ll have no problem with the training. If that were the case the damn Alorns would have overrun us years ago! ' Moving quickly down the line, the drill sergeant quickly stopped right in front of me. 'You! You know the difference between wedge and broad formations!?'
Even though I had an idea, I decided to play dumb since that’s what he expected of us. 'Sir no I don’t sir! I said loudly trying not to let my shaking body affect my voice.
'Well, ' the drill sergeant said, looking slightly pleased. 'At least one of you boys isn’t ashamed to admit that you all don’t know squat. Now lets turn those flabby muscles of yours into steel! Everyone run around the parade fields 50 times! Fast as you can and don’t stop for anything! Now move move move! '
Taking off with the rest of the group, I started to realize that this was not going to be anything like I had expected. The drill sergeant was right. I knew my way around a sword and I had thought that was basically all the skills you needed. Apparently I was completely wrong. As I completed my first lap with my breath already coming ragged, I knew this was not going to be as easy as I had once thought.
