Storyboards: Trieni
Graduation
A Mimbrate with a limp in his right leg and a scar across his left
eye. This had to be the target. Trieni steadied her breathing and
readied herself for the mission. After years of training and preparation,
she had finally been deemed ready by the matriarch for the graduation
test. What she was required to do was simple. She only needed to
kill a man.
Trieni began to access the situation. The injured leg of the target
would hamper his escape should anything go wrong. The road they
were on was rarely ever used at this time of day so there would
be no witnesses. Not that it actually mattered if anyone came, she
would simply have to kill them too.
The surroundings looked normal but Trieni knew otherwise. The matriarch
was hidden somewhere watching her every move. If Trieni accomplished
her mission, the matriarch would give Trieni her blessing and raise
her up in the order. If she failed, then there could be only death.
There was no turning back now. The Mimbrate had to die.
Trieni cursed as her initial strike was evaded by the Mimbrate and
sent another volley of fireballs at her prey. Unable to dodge, the
Mimbrate uttered a word of power erecting an invisible force field
to protect himself, much to Trieni's surprise. A Mimbrate who could
cast spells, who would have thought? It looked like Trieni would
have to use some higher-level spells.
The familiar feeling of red-hot power surge through her blood as
Trieni focused all her energy into her hands. Just as her teachers
had taught, she gathered all her anger and hatred for the world
and turned them into fuel for her spell. The mixture pulsed and
raged, begging to be released, begging for something to destroy.
Trieni pointed her finger at the Mimbrate and granted its wish.
The torrent of black fire blasted through the shield as if it were
nothing and proceeded on to devour the vulnerable Mimbrate. The
smell of charred skin and burning flesh filled the air alongside
the Mimbrate's tortured scream of pain. Except the scream was not
that of a dying Mimbrate. It was the cry of female girl.
The spell of illusion that had clouded her eyes faded away revealing
to Trieni the awful truth. Together, since young, they had survived
every torture, every ordeal. Yet now, her closest friend in the
order lay on the ground, fading away with each passing breath, all
because of a spell she had cast.
"Kill her" the voice of the matriarch sounded in her mind.
"Kill her and the task is complete"
Trieni remembered the two of them pulling pranks on the other students
only to be caught and punished.
"Kill her,” the voice sounded again "Kill her and
you will be rewarded"
Now Trieni remembered the time her friend had risked her own life
to save hers.
"Kill her," the voice rang out once more "Kill her...
or be killed"
A tear swelled up in Trieni's eye as she once again gathered energy
in her hands. "Goodbye"
