BODY CONSTRUCTION The innovative unit body is based on fully welded perimeter/space frame chassis fabricated from Hydroformed tubular steel elements (formed with water under high pressure, which allows steel to retain more of its strength through the manufacturing process) and multi-axial roll formed and/or dieless NC forming process formed metal panels. This technique makes expensive dies redundant. The designer's aim is to save materials and money through part elimination and simplified assembly processes by part integration. The project targets a 20 percent reduction in dry weight to comparable sized SUV, yet with an increase of torsional rigidity as well as bending rigidity. Hydroformed tubular elements promise reduction in tooling costs, dimensional precision, design-to-production timesaving and low waste / scrap rates. Stiffness, weight reduction, increased repeatability and improved tolerances are all key advantages to implementing hydroforming into the production process. Further weight reduction is possible with the use of Hydroformed tubular aluminum alloy/ extruded aluminum for the space frame chassis skinned with alloy and/or composite panels. Such a product would show a projected 40 percent weight reduction in the body-in-white stage. OPTIONAL:
